Remember this game show? Clearly a rip-off of University Challenge (it was RTE afterall), but had a snazzy theme-tune. Is there any Irish equivalent on TV at the moment?

"..and for the overall winners..a minibus!" There was Gridlock a few years ago but don't know if there is anything else now.

Ah yes, a minibus for your school if you won! Hardly worth the hassle really, was it?

Not really a rip-off of University Challenge, it was for secondary students and much less serious.

However RTÉ did indeed do a direct (almost to everything other than the name and theme tune) copy of University Challenge in the shape of Challenging Times, which was presented by Kevin Myers and sponsored by the Irish Times (hence the name).

God I loved Blackboard Jungle....way back when Ray had hair. Remember he did that programme We Are Family (or some such) as well?

Seeing Neil Delamere's appearence that he put on his dvd brought back the memories!

They repeated Blackboard Jungle a few years back around 3am. It's more than a little disconcerting to turn on the telly at 3am and unexpectedly see yourself on it when you assumed it'd never be on again.

Happily they've never repeated Challenging Times, while I came across as confident and knowledgeable on the kiddie show, it wasn't my night on the college one (never even watched it).

There should be a retro thread for the repeats of this thread :)

A vet of the 1993/4 campaign, won the group, got into the last 12, got a Philips personal CD player.

    Which was nice.

I got the Blackboard Jungle board game one Christmas. It was great! A bit scary unwrapping the present, having no idea what was inside it, and then having Ray Darcy's mug suddenly staring out at me though :D

Great blast from the past, great show & good experience, gave lots of people their 15 minutes!....there should still be something like it on.
Got to a group stage final & lost a thriller! Gutted. Have the walkman & ghettoblaster for my efforts....but not the famous hoodie!

I was on it twice for my sins. I did the specialist chosen round the first time (I remember the hot spotlight beating down on me, and the pressure"). But we were up against Blackrock College. It was filmed in august and the Blackrock boys looked like they weren't given summer holidays, and had been kept in for two months learning facts, so they annihilated us :D

Second time, I was team captain and we did much better - but made the mistake of risking the four pointer before the final round and lost :( I was a demon in the buzzer round though lol.

Ray: And we ask Einstein to make his selection for St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan... and it's Science and Nature, will you stay or will you go again?

    Student: Go again Ray...
