only at best brings them in line with ryanair or the major US carriers
was thinking about flying to US early next year, flying with continental/delta & 5 nights accomm. for €600, which is deffo cheaper than flying with AerL and booking hotel seperately

mrs mc steamy, last year I flew direct to new york with continental, and stayed for 5 nights in the milford plaza, 1 block from times square

on expedia.com you can get that for about €630 each, and cheaper if you choose a different hotel, or go with an indirect flight

Have they still got a fuel surcharge to the USA?

the 20% is off the basic fare, then there is taxes & charges, then 2 x €60 fuel surcharges

AerL overhedged at €100 a barrell, so they can't afford to reduce the surcharge for another few months

Well their misjudgement in the hedging should not be passed on to customers in the form of a surcharge. Instead IMO it should be dissolved in fares.

This so called sale is a sham, they simply put up the prices today and discount them to the price they were yesterday. For example, I looked at fligts to NYC 23rd February yesterday - €74 basic fare, today they are €94 basic fare. That is a 27% price hike to €94. The "Special discount" applied is €17.80! So they have jacked up the price by €20 and then with bells and whistles bring it down by €17.80!! So rather than give 20% discount as advertised, they have actually given a 3% increase in the original fare. Some sale that is.

So taking the above logic, if it had gone the other way, they hedged at $50 and oil went to $200, you would be ok with the whacking up the fuel charge anyway?

100% agree about this being a scam. I was looking to book flights to Orlando which where €79.00 each way the day before this “sale” started. The base rate has now gone up to €99.00 each way which is a 25 %
This is a scam and most flights are more expensive today than they were a few days ago

I dont really understand what you mean by this.

I am basically against fuel sucharges. If their cost of fuel goes up, they should recoup the cost in fares and/or other cost saving methods. Fuel surcharges allows them to advertize at a certain price, then boast 20% off. But in addition to taxes/charges, the add €120 to new york return. The person traveling to the Canaries is using more than 50% of the fuel of the person going to NY, but pays no fuel surcharge.

    fuel surcharges are pure stupidity

why should the customers be punished for an airline's poor hedging decisions?

Well spotted lads, this is a complete scam.
The only thing that covers the bastards is that they can claim the cheap seats were convienently sold out hours before this "amazing" 3 day sale started......

Also if something is on "sale" for the last few months how can you have a "sale" on top of it and actually end up with dearer prices than the first sale????????

I also noticed that on their flights to vegas (in conjuction with jet blue), the discount is only on the aer lingus (dublin to boston) leg of the journey, not the whole thing, in this case you only get an 11% discount

checked Delta there also for dates between 10th and 17th of March (flex to 3 +/- days)
    Delta - 332 euros
    Aer Lingus - 335 euros

    Price fixing ?

just going away form the main topic of this thread, BMI now do dublin to heathrow for €71 midweek (including during school holidays), and that includes up to 20kg of baggage & seat selection

That is exactly what their customer service (I spoke to two different people) said when I rang up to complain about it. Its almost like they have it prepared, which they do. Anyway checked up expedia as mentioned by The Groutch and can get flights and accom for 5 days circa end of Feb in NYC for €600 :)

Anyone ever stayed in Roosevelt Hotel New York?......Cant get to trip advisor in work :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

it got a 4.2 rating on expedia (339 reviews), so it's a goood omen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭topper_harley2

    Yeah saw that alright, thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

to put that in perspective, I was pretty chuffed with the one I stayed in, which only got 3.5

Any harm in asking which one that was?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

that was the milford plaza, at the other end of 45th street

Same old story and well spotted !

stayed there last january was happy with the place, room a bit small/ little dingy but clean. You should upgrade to "milford club" if its not much more - gives you access to a room with free breakfast/internet access etc

(I booked 4 days ago before current sale and have just checked against the current 20% sale - and came up within €1 of the price I paid)

just noticed as well a few days ago - it used to be if you paid by laser you paid a lower handling fee than paying by visa - but thats gone now and they charge the same handling fee - even though you are paying them immediately with laser and they don't suffer a visa fee. Next time I'm using Visa!

Am I imagining things or are the fuel surcharges scraped on transatlantic routes this morning ?

Edit: Yes they are but prices gone up in general fare.
Still under €300 to get to NY now on certain dates.
Other cities like San Fran and Orlando will benefit a lot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 334 ✭✭zeusnero

Just talked to Aer Lingus web helpdesk and as and from last night the fuel surcharge has been removed.

Unfortunately this is only for bookings made from today so those of us who spent 150 yoyos on fuel to get to Orlando and back in January get royally screwed

There is a fax number to complain to (01 886 3832) but more than likely it'll go straight into the bin...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

they have removed the fuel surcharge, but the fares are at least €20 higher, and the 20% sale is over too

There should be serious monitoring of these "sales" by consumer watchdogs.
Every time an airline has a sale they should have to produce what the prices of the remaining seats were before and what the prices for each seat are sold for in the "sale".

That way if there are complaints it is easily traceable if there actually was a sale.
