CV layout question - voluntary work

Since losing my job I've been doing some voluntary work but where should put this on my CV? As it's most recent I thought I should put it before "Employment History" but I don't want to put it under that heading, as it's not employment per se.

Should I create a new heading for Voluntary Work? This should immediately answer the "what's she been doing since he was laid off"? question.

    All answers appreciated.

Is the voluntary work related to what you do professionally, or would it look completely out of place? There is always the cover letter to explain a gap in your history.

Traditionally it should go in the Activities/Interests section however if (as the poster above said) it is a professionally relateable type of charity work then dont be afraid to put it in the employment section, call this section "Career experience" rather than employment and it might look better- you should make the clear distinction that it is volunteer work rather than paid employment but expand on the duties and responsibilities in the same way as you would in paid employment.

Apart from demonstrable social awarenes (ie volunteer work) being a new sought after attribute the fact that you are currently applying yourself while unemployed is going to make you stand out from competition

That's what I was thinking. Not that it's the only reason but it's definately a plus. The voluntary work is not related to my career, just something to do to keep busy while out of work for a while.

I would be inclined not to put it at the top of your work experience then - put it in another section, and mention it in your cover letter. Your most recent work experience is one of the first things they will see, so I would keep it relevant.
