I have a recent 20'' monitor (lots of connections) for TV watching etc, but the sound is fairly standard.

There are two options in my house, both mini Hi-Fis

ONE: A philips system with no inputs whatsoever. However I got around this by using one of these (well not that exact brand)
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TGC-Player-Tape-Cassette-Adapter/dp/B000LULI8M.

Anyway I plugged it into the Headphones socket on the TV and can play TV sound through my No input Philips Mini Hifi. (I think I note a slight improvement-possible degradation but the whole thing is better overall if that makes sense).

I should mention I keep the Hifi volume low and the TV volume very high because Tape Decks have a certain amount of Feedback when no sound is being played. Anyone see any problems with any of this?

TWO: Theres a Sony Mini Hi-Fi that has an Audio in. So I assume I could use a 3.5mm Jack to stick that straight into the headphones socket on my TV again.

I haven't tried the Sony optino yet but assume a straight 3.5mm Jack into the HI Fi would be better than going via the tape deck.

Anyone got any thoughts, is it a problem to have my TV volume nearly maxed all the time or anything, is the headphones socket in the TV meant to be used this way etc etc?

Im too cheap too buy a proper system.

If I was you I'd use the 3.5mm jack on the Sony. Start with the TV volume low and adjust it upwards until the volume from the audio input is at the same volume as the other sources (CD/Tuner/Tape) on the Sony. Don't overdo the level of the audio signal from the TV as you'll only cause the signal to clip which will sound awful.
