I noticed that most Saxophones I see around in the shops are in the key of F#. Would this be ok to play the majority of songs out there?

Almost all saxophones are either in the key of E flat, or B flat. The F sharp you referred to is just the highest note available, and is pretty standard across the range.
I'd recommend getting a Tenor ( which would be in B flat). But you'd really want to read up a bit more on them before making a purchase.
