I had 6 years no claims bonus under my own name. I went to Australia for a year, and have been a named driver on another policy for a year which bring me up to now.

I phone up to verify my insruance quote of 630€ and was told that since 2 years have gone by since i was last insured with my no claims bonus that it has expired.
insurance with one years named driving experience will be 1500€.

Does that sound wrong to anyone else ?

Yeah, you were insured under your own name for 6 years. Surely that still counts?

they are correct, you lose your NCB, I lived in Oz for just over 2 years, I was told this would happen before I went away so I didn't cancel my policy which had 5 months or so on it before I left, which meant I was not outside the 2 years without full named insurance and therefore kept my full NCB.

sorry to bear the bad news

NCB is only valid for two years. This is standard across all of the insurers.

It does sound wrong. It IS wrong too, but, unfortunately all the usual suspects make it that there's nothing you can do.

My wife lost 16yrs no-claims, after taking time off for 2 kids - and we were only just outside the 2 yrs when she went back. Not Happy, she was....

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Pretty standard practice for motor insurance.

Your bonus is gone but they should offer you someyhing for the driving experiance in the OZ if their was no break in cover

Unfortunatly it's correct, but some insurance companies should still count the driving experience... maybe ring some other places and explain to them that you had got a full ncb but it expired and are just looking to get the best deal because despite not having an ncb you have a clean driving experience.

I want to break something in half !!!

follow up on this - i got my 6 years no claims sent out to me by post just to have on file.
I look at the date it expired (i assumed that it expired on Aug 2006 so 2 years after is Aug 2008)... but it expired on Dec 8th 2006 ! which means that if i had known about this friggin 2 weeks ago !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am so unhappy right now.

You should ring a broker ASAP! brokers have good contacts with insurance companies and they might be able to get you cover with a company who will turn a blind eye to a couple of days in the difference.

Also the fact that you were a named driver back in ireland only a year later even though not in your own name should reinstate your bonus. I've come across this before.

i was using AA and they were quite unhelpful when i was trying to get re-insured.
though at the time it was like 4 months over the 2 years rather than 2 weeks.

thing i found out too is that infact i dont have a full years Named Driving Experience, its just since March - things are seriously going against me.

as soon as i opened that letter tonight i called about 4 places to get answering machines. first thing tomorrow morning ! :)

Smaller brokers might be a better option as its more personal maybe.

There's a company called Sertus based in Galway that only go through certain brokers, they seem to be reasonable enough with things like this as they will(should) take into account the driving experience.

Anyway, best of luck with it.

It does sound wrong, all insurance companies do is take your money. The moment you need to make a claim, your premium will go up to compensate what've claimed. If you had 6 years of costly earned NCB, that should be accounted for you without any expiry dates, 2/3/4 years, etc (otherwise whats the point of having NCB, or even pay more for stepback or full NCB discount one may wonder). This whole mandatory car insurance industry is a legalized money racket lobbied all the way on the top in gov. offices. The system is very one sided designed to rip ppl off. These issues should be brought up to mass media and wider discussion forums and TV (doubt they would allow that). That's the only way to create a more transparent and fairer insurance system. It's a cartel, similar to banking industry which works in collusion with government and legislation. It is a sad reality we are in...

By this stage, the op already has 5 years NCB if no claims since he posted here. This is an old thread. Reported.

Hi all, I'm going abroad for two years and became aware of this issue after hearing people talk about it on radio. I'm anxious not to lose my NCB.

Atm, I have fully comp insurance in my own name on my own car. My parents will be using the car while I'm away (and may even transfer it to their own names). Can I retain my NCB by renewing (when the time comes) with cheaper 3rd party fire and theft cover?

Is there any cheap way of retaining my NCB while I'm away?

    I appreciate your input.

Dont post in a six year old thread would be a start.

Dont post in a six year old thread would be a start.

Others have replied to this six-year-old thread as little as a week ago, Cuddlesworth. It was a perfectly legitimate question on a thread that appears to be still active.

Do you have any actual constructive information to add to my post? That's what Boards is for, after all.

Yes, just keep a policy active in your name and you should be fine. You dont even need to do it every year, just so long as the car doesnt go more than two years without cover.

Question: so if the OP pays the 1500 euro and drives for a year with no claims will their next year’s quote include an NCB with a premium returning to the 630 euro?
Or will they have to accumulate another 6 years of NCB to get that 600 euro rate?

NCB is not the only factor in determining the premium, but yes they would need to build the NCB back up over time. Thats not to say an insurer might not take everything (age, experience etc) into account when calculating the base premium, so it might end up cheaper quicker.

Make sense now, so all NCB’s are not created equal. A 6 year NCB will carry more weight than a 1 year NCB.

    Thanks

    Thanks for clarifying Djimi.
