So we are less than 2 weeks away from the start of the biggest Darts tournament in the world and I am starting to get very excited :D

The draw for the Preliminary round has already been made. It includes our very own Shane O' Connor and Anastasia Dobromyslova. The draw is as follows:

Hannes Schnier (Austria) v Shi Yongsheng (China)
David Fatum (USA) v Shane O'Connor (Ireland)
Warren French (New Zealand) v Akihiro Nagakawa (Japan)
Marko Kantele (Finland) v Lourence Ilagan (Philippines)
Charles Losper (South Africa) v Sudesh Fitzgerald (Guyana)
Remco van Eijden (Holland) v Anastasia Dobromyslova (Russia)

Lets hope that Shane can beat the American guy and make the first round proper.

The draw for the first round matches is live today at 2:30pm on Sky Sports News Should be interesting to see who the big boys get and if there are any chances of shocks.

Well done to Brendan and John on quallifying for the Championships.
Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship PDPA Qualifiers
FORMER semi-finalist Dennis Smith was among the eight players to qualify for the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship at the PDPA Qualifiers on Saturday.

Smith, who reached the last four in the 2000 World Championship, earned his place at Alexandra Palace later in December with a 5-3 victory over Dave Smith in their decisive game of the knockout qualifiers.

Smith had earlier defeated Michael Smith, Stuart Stubbs and Paul Knighton to ensure his 13th World Championship appearance and his first since the 2006 event.

John MaGowan, a 67-year-old from Northern Ireland, ensured his second World Championship appearance with a 5-0 whitewash of Gary Blades in his decisive match, having also defeated former qualifiers Alan Caves and Paul Williams in the event.

Those two were the only players from the eight qualifiers who have previously played in the World Championship, with a host of new faces winning through at the Telford International Centre.

Brendan Dolan, who has previous experience of the big stage from the UK Open and World Grand Prix, joined fellow countryman MaGowan in the World Championship after a narrow victory over Lancashire's Louis Blundell in his decider.

Newcastle's Mark Stephenson, Somerset's Steve Grubb, Stourbridge's Nick Fullwell and Sussex's Tony Ayres will make their World Championship debuts after coming through the qualifier.

Grubb, a publican from Radstock, came from 4-2 down against American Isen Veljic to win his place in the tournament, while Fulwell was another final-leg winner, against Ken Dobson.

Essex postman Michael Barnard, who has been on the PDC circuit since 2004, defeated experienced professional Dave Askew to earn his first World Championship appearance, having also defeated America's John Kuczynski and number 13 seed Steve Brown on the day.

Top seed Mick McGowan suffered disappointment with a third round defeat to Billingshurst-based Ayres, while America's UK Open runner-up Gary Mawson was a first round casualty against Mark Jodrill.

Alongside the news that dobdromyslova is now a full time PDC player, hopefully she can mix it with the big boys on a regular basis

Its a shame jacko barry isnt on the list of qualifiers, nor mick mcgowan, but Shane Carries the flag with Brendan Dolan and John Magowan

Yeah very disappointed neither of these made it, Mick was top seed in the qualifiers as well but lost in the third round. He really has been going through a bad patch on TV, hopefully he can find the form next year that we all know he can show.

At least we have three players to get behind!

True, it would be a horrible WC if we didnt have 1 irishman to support. Sure in years to come you can all shout for me :D :pac:

Caven Walsh strikes me as a good one

Pity Taylor got an unknown, its always the early stages he's most vulnerable

Dolan getting wade, i hope dolan does well

McDine .vs. Roy could be a roaster too

    Wouldnt mind seeing Eccles/Dobromoslova
    could be epic

I hope it's better then last years. It's hard to see anyone bar Taylor romping home in this one. Barney is not throwing 105+ consistantly to beat Taylor. I don't think Wade has shown the form to go all the way this year.

Some of the early games last year suffered from a distinct lack of atmosphere - Problem with a big venue that's not full, when big venues go quiet they tend to go very quiet.

Have to say I think the BDO competition will be more competitive, there's at least 4 people with a very realistic chance of winning it, unfortunately I can't say the same for PDC.

I agree with all this. I go over to London for the World Championships every year and I loved the Circus tavern as a venue. It was such an intimate venue, no matter where you sat you were right on top of the stage and the atmosphere is fantastic. The Ally Pally is not even half as good, the atmosphere is very flat and I don't think it's a good darts venue at all. The PDC moved it because the Ally Pally could fit in more fans but I think last years Championship suffered because of it.

I can't see past Taylor either. He has won almost everything this year and his form has gotten better and better. Wade hasn't been quite at his best and Barney hasn't been for a while now. Personally I would love to see someone win it that has never won a major before, would be great for the sport.

The BDO championship is wide open and there are some excellent players in there, but again I think the Lakeside crowd don't produce a great atmosphere and it can be a bit stale. Also there are better players in general in the PDC tournament. That said I'm looking forward to both!

Yeah the lakeside really sounds and looks like a pub that happens to have a darts match going on, the PDC worlds won't get going till after Christmas, expect a few upsets.

What's amazing about the Ally Pally is that if you look at any footage of the News of the World competitions the atmosphere was mental.

    Hey all,

going to Ally Pally this year for 3 days after xmas, just wondering from those of you who have been last year, what's the venue like for food and drinks facilities etc

Taylor was on Sky sports during the week and he was all smug and saying if he does not win it he will be shocked.
I really hope he gets beaten as if he wins i think people will start going away from the Pdc an back to the Bdo. As it will have become boring.
Come on Barney and get back to winning.:)

Food is grand, usual thing of burgers and chips etc. Nice and isn't too expensive. Beer is pretty reasonable too but the queues can be pretty long, especially if you go out at the end of a set. Make sure to buy 3 beers at a go and you will be grand :)

I'll be heading over myself after New years. You will love it, can't beat a night of darts.

    Enjoy!

For me Wade or Lewis are the two who can do it this year if Taylor doesn't.

For all Adrian Lewis' faults, I have felt for a long time that he has a World title in him - if he can just focus on himself and not get rattled, he has the game to beat anyone on his day.

Wade is a class act, ( and by all accounts is getting VERY friendly with Helen Chamberlain who is no longer wearing her engagement ring from the gutairist from Level 42 - is this a gossip forum ? ), so if he can hit the bullseye there, why can't he do it at the Ally Pally ;)

No way will Lewis come close to winning the worlds, he hasn't come close in any other major and imo hasn't the bottle, lets too much external factors interfere with his game.

Don't fancy Wade either. Phil is 1/2 to win already, that says it all. I really hope that the worlds is going to be better then what I think it's going to be but it all looks pretty inevitable - Let's hope for some good matches along the way.

Agree with this. Lewis has amazing natural ability, he is the kind of person that just picked up a set of darts and could hit everything. Problem he has is upstairs, he is way too cocky for his own good and lets things get to him. He is easy to wind up and until he gets the mental strength to block those things out he won't ever win anything. I think he is improving, the Premier League has really helped him. I don't think he is ready yet though and a Quarter-Final place would be a good tournament for him.

How about Terry Jenkins.Seemed to be back to some sort of form in the grand slam of Darts.
He has been the Bridesmaid in so many Tv Finals. He is sure to get lucky sometime.
If Barney cannot do it. I hope Terry can.

I'd like to see Wade win it.I think he's good enough but the worry is his form hasn't been fantastic this year.I might chance a small wager on him.Currently 10/1 on Betfair.
Declan30 wrote How about Terry Jenkins

No chance. Not good enough.Even when he was at his best he choked miserably.Currently 43/1 on Betfair and with good reason.

From an entertainment, in a kind of sick way, point of view Peter Manley would be an appealing winner. Can you imagine the amount of head wrecking he would get through.Won't happen though.

Any predictions for possible upsets, I think there's a few on in the first round.

Rodriguez to beat Scholten, first match, Roland has not had a good year.

Co Stompe to beat Andy Jenkins, Stompe hot off hitting some great darts at a German open against Taylor.

Matt Clark to beat Kevin Painter - Painter always suspect.

Felix McBrearty to beat Barrie Bates. Good win for the Irish

Per Laurson to beat Wes Newton - Wes has gone off the boil completely

John McGowan to beat Chris Mason, again Mason always suspect.

Van Der Rassell to beat Shephard - Kirk used up all his luck last year

Spot on analysis. I love watching him though, when he's in full flow he's a joy to watch.

Shan Dont think wade will do it.He seems to have lost interest in playing darts.Had a Poor Grand slam of darts even though he did get a 9 dart finish.

Peter Manley as winner Sky would Love that think of the crowd against him and all the fun they would have playing him up.:)

Manley definitely plays the 'bad guy' role quite well, but he will always be an 'also run' when it comes to the World Championships.

Before the PDC changed the scoring/rating system for tournaments around the world, Manley would shootin in more tournamnets just to get his points total up. We used to see him in the Spring/Summer in the States shooting steel/plastic tipped tournaments.

During this time he had accumulated enough points to be ranked #1 in the World a few years running, but would only crack the Top Five when it came to the PDC WC every year.

Mostly spot on, but i gotta disagree about Mcbrearty beating Bates unfortunately. To much class about the little welshman.

Yeah was a little disappointed in the show, it was basically a biography of Phil Taylor! I thought they were going to do a little run through of the players and their form etc. Still was nice to see some of the classic matches again and the show just reinforced my opinion that it should be held in the Circus Tavern and not the Ally Pally!

And I agree, Christmas starts when the darts starts! You can't have a Happy Christmas without some tungsten flinging!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 845 ✭✭✭nhughes100

Yeah, dissapointing but he has been the stalwart of finals and classic matches over the years. The programme could have been two hours long and could have included some of the classic semis too instead of clips from the matchplay. Yes it was an amazing finish but it wasn't in the worlds!!

Finally it's here, day one of the World Championships 2009!!!

    Tonight's schedule of play:
First Round (Preliminary Round games denoted by (P))
    Friday December 19
    7.10pm - Roland Scholten v Carlos Rodriguez
    8.15pm - Warren French v Akihiro Nagakawa (P)
    9.00pm - Wayne Jones v Robert Thornton
    10.00pm - John Part v Bill Davis
    11.00pm - Andy Jenkins v Co Stompe

A couple of interesting looking matches tonight. Carlos Rodriguez has been playing very well on the circuit, he actually won one of the Players Championships recently. Scholten has been very poor this season so I think Rodriguez will go through in this one. I don't know anything about French or Nagakawa but I'm going to go for French to get through :pac:

Wayne Jones against Robert Thornton has the potential to be a very good match. Jones hasn't been in great for recently but he is capable of playing some top class darts and could push Thornton. Thornton is a very good player though and I think he can go far in this tournament and he should end up beating Wayne.

Part against Davis is another interesting one. The American is a good player but he isn't used to the longer format which could be a problem for him. Part is unbeaten at the Ally Pally and I can't see that changing tonight.

Andy Jenkins against Stompe is the match of the nigh for me. A very hard one to call this, when Jenkins is on form he can be very very good and can average over 100, likewise Stompe who was one of the better players on the BDO circuit. This one will be very close but I'm going to go for Jenkins to edge it.

    Bring on the Darts

I was shocked to see the price of Scholten for this match, he is currently 2/1. I don't know anything about Rodriguez but I do know that Roland has been on a bad run. However playing on tv and all the stuff that goes with it might lift Roland and Rodriguez might get it tough up there tonight. I'd fancy Roland could pull this one off and at a nice price too.

I'm not saying its a certainty by any means, but from what I've heard the experience of the big stage in televised darts is a hugely advantageous.

Have just bunged €2 on all the outsiders tonight....could lift €1300 all being well:D

Roland Scholten on top form would beat Rodriguez, sadly though Scholten has been awful all year, he averaged 65 in one of his games this season. I hate to say it but he could be suffering froma small form of the dread D disease. Your right that experience on TV does count a lot but I have no idea what type of man Rodriguez is. If he can keep his head he will win. I suppose at the price Scholten is at he might be worth a punt but I won't be puting anything on him :pac:

I think he had a neck or shoulder operation in Nov, His year has been seriously hampered by injury, your right though I would not put a cent on him.

Just saw him on SSN and he has not had the operation but it will be soon, he did say that he is on pain killers though

Well I have a free bet now, backed Scholten at 2/1 and just backed Rodriguez and evens with one set to go, so if Roland wins I make money and if Carlos wins, I end up with no loss. Nice:)

    Warren French 5 v 3 Akihiro Nagakawa

What an awful game, worst match I have ever seen on stage. Felt sorry for both players. I'd love to see the averages. Sky even went for a break during the match.

Well the defending World Champion John Part has just been knocked out 3-0 by Davis.
