80% of mangoes in UK supermarkets are Tommy Atkins, developed in Florida in 1940s. It is favoured because of its disease resistance and shelf-life. But not its flavour or texture. Having lived in the tropics and travelled alot in tropical regions, I favour mangoes that are just ready to fall, such as the favoured Julie Mangoes of the West Indies.

Could it have just been unripe? dunno if they are really in season. You can get big tins of tinned mangos in asian food stores, relatively cheap compared to fresh ones.
