Has anyone seen the Nikkor 50mm, f1.4G AF-S for sale anywhere, or did I just dream it?

They definitely exist, but I haven't seen one for sale yet. In fact, I've been trying hard not to look for one, too many tempting goodies out there already!

Found it in Jessops eventually but I think I'll wait for it to
    a) come in stock and
    b) drop in price :)

    It's 289.99 on Conns website.

As a newbie, can someone explain why this lens is so much more expensive than the 50mm 1.8?

no, that's not the same lens, that's the older afd in conns.

Adorama and Ritzcamera.com both have them listed as shipping as soon as stock is received from manufacturer.

Same reason why F2.8 lenses are so much more expensive than F4 lenses - every little counts, especially as you go towards the limit (look up the price of the f0.9 Nikkor 35mm - http://homepage2.nifty.com/akiyanroom/redbook-e/repro/tv.html

okay it's more down to collectability with that lens rather than functionality).

Or the Noct-Nikkor f1.2 - goes for around 3000 dollars apparently.

You normally get higher performance, better construction, improved durability etc.

    I could ask why the 50mm 1.8 AFD is 4x more expensive than the 50mm f2 pre-AI I bought (a lot of reasons ;) )

As for the 50mm f1.4G I'm put off by the fact that Nikon has broken with tradition and used a 58mm filter size ring (every 50mm before this had been 52mm - including those f1.2 lenses).

hmm so if I save up E300 its either an engagement ring or an AF-S 50mm lens... decisions decisions..

Save up €307 and buy both. :D

I take no responsibility if your fiancée batters you to death with a really nice lens.

Yeah its a pita. That plus the fact that its a G lens so I can't use it on my manual film bodies. Its a pity, because the optical formula is meant to be considerably superior to the old AF-D, hence, I guess, the 58mm filter size. there's no excuse for the lack of an aperture ring though. grrr.

I'm quite torn. The old 1.8 would be a huge improvement on anything I have (kit lens and a 70-200). But with the 1.4 wandering around I feel "I've waited this long, why not wait a bit longer to get that instead". I could in theory go for the D lens, but I fancy having autofocus.
