i was running a scan for virus's and spyware on my laptop and the entire thing froze mid scan. I had no choice but to shut it down by pressing the power button.

Now when i turn it on the screen remains completely black and nothing appears on screen. its definately on as the fan is running continously...which it didnt before. and the power and wireless lights are on.

i dont mind completely resetting my computer, but dont know how to if nothing is appearing on screen. does any one have any ideas??

    Try re-seating the ram.

open the ram cover under the laptop. Remove the ram and re insert it. Though i doubt this is the case. If you can, get access to an external monitor and plug into that and see if that works.

Sounds like faulty Ram or a dead motherboard to me.

It sounds like it could be stuck in some sleep mode.Unplug from wall and take out battery.Replace battery and power on.

Also check in case you hit the external VGA key (usually FUNCTION + F-??) by accident where you would see nothing on your laptop screen so plug in a spare CRT or LCD into your laptop to make sure before you start fiddling under the hood!
