i bought a jacket in topshop a few weeks ago and paid 182 euro for it..brought it back to exchange it and they said they can't give me a credit note..i can just change it for something else...so can someone tell me why exactly they wouldnt give me store credit.. i lost the receipt so i dont expect a refund but i dont see the difference in store credit and exchanging for something else....
took the jacket home with me anyways, everything in store this time of year is too glittery..eugh.

another question..in store their tag has the uk price and the irish price..which is usually unfairly converted. if i was to shop online would they charge the same wacky conversion rate or do they just charge the actual exchange rate of that day?

This might be better in consumer issues.

    ok first off...

the retailer - in this case topshop - are under no legal requirement to give you a refund/store credit unless the item is to be found to be not of merchantible quailty (i.e. damaged). sometimes a retailer will give you store credit but this is usually to keep your goodwill.

    secondly...

the tags do include the sterling/euro prices for cost saving efforts (they only have to print up one set of price tags) this is done months in advanced and the exchange is set when they are printing the tags. there is also the fact that wages/rent/insurance/etc.etc. is more expensive over here and not to mention we've a higher rate of V.A.T. here too.

    thirdly and finally...

i'm not familiar with topshop's online store, but if they allow you to pay in sterling then you will get the current exchange rate as they will bill your credit card in sterling and then your credit card company or bank will do the conversion. although many major retailers prevent this by making you buy in euro and usually mark up their products so they are in line with the prices they charge in their stores here.

    hope that covers it.

Topshop have always given me a cash refund, you must have lost the receipt?

As for shopping online, yes they charge in sterling so it is charged at the days conversion rate, hence shopping online is way cheaper than in their Irish stores.

The reason why you cant get a credit note is because when you return something without a reciept in topshop, you can only get the current value of the item so if it has gone down in sale you will only get the sale price. If they were to give you a credit note you would be able to potentially get the fully price of the item not the sale price. If you had bought the item on sale and returned it without a reciept and got the full price you could potentially make a profit.

    thanks for the replies everyone.

i did indeed lose the receipt (i tend to throw them away after i buy things..bad habit) the jacket is still in their stores at the full price..i only asked why they didnt give store credit because before i bought something in there and they gave me store credit without a receipt..granted this was probably a year ago and the dress was only about 50 euros (compared to the 182 euro for the jacket), but still.
one girl who worked there told me to ask for the manager and he'd have no problem giving me the value on a giftcard since its quite a bit of money (was also told this on the phone last week), but when i asked the other girl at the counter she told me the manager wasn't there and even if he was i wouldn't get store credit...sigh.

No, she said she was in the same situation about a year ago and was able to get a credit note at the time. Policy must have changed.

I guess it's because Topshop do student discounts - you could buy something in Topshop with the 10% off student discount, go away and 'lose' your receipt, and come back looking for a 100% refund, profiting by 10% of the value of the item.

If a store offers full refunds and exchanges, WHY would it need to offer store credit also. Store credit is used by shops who don't offer refunds/exchanges. You lost the receipt, you have no comeback, if I were you I'd gladly get stuff worth €182 by doing an exchange with it. I'd be surprised if management actually give in to you and give you a giftcard to the value.

Are you sure you got an actual credit note from them before? I used to work with Arcadia, and that was never part of their refund policy...

Their refund policy is actually very generous compared to other shops, in fairness. Legally, your only entitled to a refund / exchange when your purchase is faulty. Even with a reciept, you don't technically have the right to a refund / exchange on anything you don't like.

I would reccomend you swap it asap, as they are going into sale soon, so your jacket may well be reduced. After this, you will only get the current price of the coat, not the price you paid for it.. This prevents someone from buying the item at half price, bringing it back and asking for an exchange saying they bought it at full price..

You don't have to bring it back to the same branch, so if they wouldn't give you a gift card there, might be an idea to try another one of their other shops (make sure you bring it to a stand alone branch tho, not a concession, eg clearys, as they can't give giftcards).

Moral of the story: Never throw out reciepts if your not sure about one of your purchases!!! Just keep them all in a drawer or something, and do a cleanout every few months... Will save you plenty of hassle in future!!!! ;)

Topshop has never offered store credit/credit notes. I worked with them for many years and their return policy is one of the best on the high street.

In fairness, their return policy is the exact same as department stores (except M&S) and most other high street stores offer the same, except A-Wear I think, which has (or used to have) a 14-day policy.
