    Hi.
I am travelling to Boston soon and was planning on buying the Nikon 18 - 200mm VR lens.
Does anyone know of any good shops I should try over there?
Also just to confirm that this lens is compatable with the Nikon D40?
Anyone have any experience with this lens?

    Thanks

First off, it is compatible with the D40.

It's a very good lens, especially as a walkaround lens, does nothing really badly, gives you great scope compared to the kit lens and the VR is excellent.

I bought one thinking it would never be off the camera, but I've actually found it's not being used as much as I had thought. Its a bit of a jack of all trades but not outstanding at anything.
It's not fast enough for sports where the VR doesn't help when the subjects are moving, and it's not super sharp wide open. That and the fact that I'm a bit addicted to my 10-20 and my nifty fifty.

But i'd still definitely recommend one. For the price there's nothing close and the vr will get you a much higher percentage of good in focus shots.

Never used the lens so can't comment on it, but if you do the maths (which I just quickly did!!!!) most lenses are working out cheaper from the UK than the states. At a quick conversion with getting it from www.warehouseexpress.com and B&H, from the UK it's about €485 and from the USA it works out about €525-€530 (remember the sales tax they add on in the states, which is about 8% or 9% depending on the state).

I agree, it's a good lens for travel or when you need an all in one solution. It's good but not great

Ken Rockwell sings the 18-200's praises from on high. Weird that you guys have such indifference!

I don't own one but i'm just pointing it out....

And I'd be lying if I said he hadn't influenced by him the past!

But now that I feel secure enough to be confident in my OWN judgment :), I'm happy to say that it's a good lens, very handy to have, and for the price, everyone who wants a good quality, versatile walkaround lens should consider it. But does it replace every lens in my bag? No! :)

I had one but sold it. Very handy lens but being honest, soft and lacking in contrast in a lot of situations. Swapped it for an 80-200 2.8. I think it depends what you're looking for really, don't expect miracles. It's decent enough and super versatile but limited in many respects also.

OT, but I've been looking at the 80-200 f2.8 mloc as a lower cost alternative to the 70-200 as I don't think I need the VR. How do you find it?

I had one too but sold it a few months later. As above it was soft and the zoom creep annoyed the hell out of me. I replaced it with the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and never looked back.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Is anyone familiar with camera stores in Boston?

    Hunts Camera shop Boston.
I bought Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens in Hunts of Boston which is located at 520, Commonwealth Ave. This is fairly central. I Found them very nice to deal with and they are as cheap as Adorama for most things. Monte Torres is the Shop manager if memory serves me. They have about 5 shops in or around Boston. They have a decent website also which is worth a visit. www.huntsphotoandvideo.com
