Best software for storing and organising music?

I used SonicStage up to now cos it came free with my mp3 player, but got a new laptop recently and cant find the sonicstage installation cd, so wondering if there is any (preferably free) good software for storing music on a laptop?
Or is Windows Media Player just as good as any?

What I'm after is sumthing that I can burn my cds onto and then arrange the music into different genres and playlists. Then I can playback using shuffle and things like that. Handy for when throwing house parties and stuff.

    Any ideas?

And another q while I'm on the subject - if I brun a track to my hard drive, then I put that same track into three different categories or playlists, I presume it is just a pointer to the one single track that is used in each of those playlists and its not the case that three separate copies of the track are made?

Try some of the programs recommended here. I've used iTunes in the past myself but it's a terrible piece of bloatware IMHO.

yes you can have the same file in as many playlists as you like.

Honestly I just use Windows Media Player 11. It does everything you seem to want, and will work fine with your mp3 player 9 times out of 10.

Foobar2000 has one of the best music library managers out there.

I use iTunes generally. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to having my ID3 tags perfect and adhering to a rigid folder structure, and iTunes just does it all. It also has the added benefit of automatically sharing your music with any other instances of iTunes on a local network, with zero config.

At the same time, I hate it for not playing ogg and flac, so I use foobar on my Windows pc and VLC on my mac. Both can require a bit of TLC to get off the ground and I don't think VLC really 'does' music libraries (although it's something I haven't looked in to).

I'd be disinclined to go with Winamp or Real Player.

Real player is a filthy piece of software. It tries to take over your computer and uses file formats which are incompatible with anything. It's bloated and sends an uncomfortable amount of info back 'home'.

Winamp started with good intentions. A lot of people became unhappy in or around version 2.7 when I think it started bowing to corporate pressure to make a bit more money, there was allegations of spyware and it started to get a bit crippled. That was when I stopped using it. I haven't gone back or looked back, so I can't tell you what it's like now.

As for Sonic Stage, stay well away. Consider yourself lucky you lost the disk. Between ridiculous proprietary file formats, a Nazi DRM policy and resource hogging it's bad.

One thing I've noticed about Windows Media Player is that it doesnt seem to be able to find album art. Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley, one of the best alternative albums of the last 15 years for example, WMP got all the track info alright, but could not get me the albm art. Why is that? Is it to do with my settings? Or is it just generally bad for that kinda thing?
