Do you have or need permission to have the bike section on the N11 if it is redesignated as the M11 Motorway as currently proposed? If this doesn't affect next year's event, it will surely affect future events at Courtown.

    Good point.

We are well aware of this from the beginning. Considering i don't work for the roads I naturally can't answer your question definitely. We are talking 2010 here so there is an element of predicting the future here too. These comments should not be percieved as negative - anything but I might quickly add.

What i will say that come the time (if/when it arises) we will be talking to the same departments as we did this year to secure the road closure.

If the event is a success - no doubt that will be a trump card should this point get raised.

I agree fully. Assuming this year is a success securing the road shouldn't be the big obstacle. Good luck with the event. Don't think I'll be ready for the standard myself (well, definitely not the long distance race) this year but great to see another event in the calendar.

Nice work Eoin... I presume you'll have a mobile tattoo parlour on-site, to brand the happy punters with the Eireman logo?:D

You know - thats not a bad idea! We could put it beside the Medical tent and swap the names above the Tents.
    I'm joking of course...... :)

Credit to him - all the branding was done by Alan Ryan (most in Triathlon would recognise Alan's name). Fantastic job Alan.
His company name is Chaos Press - Highly recommend.

Ok Eoin, you're getting the free plugs for the race in, don't push it. People pay for advertising on boards!

    Eoin,

A question for you on one of the rules.
    11) ALL competitors must wear reflective material on their outer layer of clothing on the Run course. Competitors MUST PROVIDE their own reflective materials.

How much reflective material is necessary to satisfy this rule?
A reflective arm-band? A Sam Browne sash type of thing? A high-viz vest?

    Regards,

    Liam

    Hi Liamo,

Fair point. I know what i was trying to say. But clearly made a bags of it.

It really just applies to the Long distance ppl who anticipate they will be out when it starts getting dark.

I'll amend that and word it better

    Thanks
    Eoin

Eoin, Some of my UK and German based friends are asking me why their national triathlon licenses are not valid? They have a point (apart from USAT) my TI licence has always been valid for me abroad.

Apart from that (and the £-€ exchange rate) all the feedback from them has been positive. It has caught people's imagination.

From a Triathlon Ireland perspective the valid license for any NGB should be okay I believe.

Thanks Hunnymonster/ Tunney. You are correct. I'll shoot my messenger....
Leaving the killing aside for a second. I'd like to make the Irish Triathletes aware of this....

    Hi All,
I would like to bring this to the attention of the Irish Triathletes. I have received massive positive feedback on Eireman (thankfully). One thing that has come up now and again is the entry fee. Begs to ask the question what can we do about it...? I’ll come back to that in a minute.
Firstly let’s focus on the positives of Eireman. The course is good and it will be fast. A closed Duel Carriageway is a treasure for a race. I think the location in Courtown has a lot in its favour to entertain the Mums/ Dads and the Kids. www.courtownharbour.com
The North Wexford community are looking forward to seeing all you guys.

Yes, some folk have raised an eyebrow about the price. I will say that creating a NEW race of this size and scale costs a frightening amount of money. The costs of goods have gone up globally for all the different reasons we are all aware of. Point being, the cost of race material and equipment has also risen. That didn’t escape the credit crunch. All the facilities you expect from a long distance race will be present and accounted for.

Now, I was/ am a triathlete before I was a Race Director (I had a life once...). It took me 2 years of looking to find this great course so you can be quite sure I want to share it with everyone. I believe this will be a quality race and thankfully my views have been backed up by ppl who have travelled and done a few globally. Long distance courses are hard to come by – the understatement of the year probably! I want this course to reach its potential without devaluing the Brand. So here is what I propose to do....

I’ll make a pledge right here that if we get the Sponsors (something on the lines of Almere – who have 30 sponsors) – then watch that entry fee price go down. And anyone who has already subscribed will be refunded the difference. Let’s be clear that we are talking sponsors of a certain scale (Not... Mrs Murphy’s home made apple tarts). The price ain't gonna go down to zero – let’s be realistic also. We shall see what comes of this... A certain amount will have to be reinvested into the race for extra signage etc. The Sponsors that you see at all the Triathlon gigs would be the obvious candidates.

I will continue to lead the charge for Sponsors. Some people asked me how they could help...? Everyone has contacts and networks in the Triathlon community. In a manner of speaking we are now all empowered to do something here (if you wish). Welcome to the birth of the triathlon co-op!! This might well be race director suicide - but so be it. I spent yesterday looking at P+L sheets and many ‘what if’ scenarios and gave it a lot of consideration. Naturally a certain level of negotiating privacy between sponsor and event will need to be respected. We are talking about Title and Gold sponsors here. Basically the ones that bring in the bucks! If we get only one of these sponsors in and it will only make an insignificant difference to individual entry fees – we’ll add it to the charity pot. That sounds fair I think.

I have no doubt that there are ppl reading these threads that work at these target sponsorship companies. People often wonder where the sponsorship money goes??? The bulk of the sponsorship money will subsidise the race fee for competitors. That’s now very transparent.
(I can be contacted in the email section of boards.ie should any prospective companies wish to get in contact)
Ok- enough said. Power to the people
    Cheers

    Just checked the race entry

€300 - for that price direct comparisions to IM branded races and Challenge races (e.g. Roth and Barcelona) are valid and can be made. That's a big shadow to be in.

Eoin, Ok almere is only €175 to enter, but looking at other races
Roth - €300 (rising to €350) - and you can't possibly have worse weather!
Kraichgau - don't even list their price on the website
Ironman corp - 350-400 depending on exchange rate.
I think people who don't routinely do the long distance/ large field races might not have a good grasp of the logistics involved and just how much it costs.

Something I'm sure you've considered but I'll torment you a bit more :-), with a 4 lap course and up to 1200 people, are you worried about congestion on the bike? The reason I ask, is in Florida (single lap but 2500 participants), the bunching was insane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

yes, but we are not aiming to be in their shadow. We plan to stand beside them. So our costs are the same (maybe more) than theirs.

moving away from that. A triathlon race is about the course. We have a great course. Add in all the elements you expect to see at a typical long distance race.... Result = Eireman.

Now refering back to my post (the long one). Becasue we ain't one of those big companies we can bend the rules a little. Hence that is exactly what i'm proposing to do

    E

Good point Honneymonster. Glad someone brought it up.

The Half Distance people will be in and off the course before most "IM distance" competitors have really warmed up. That takes a lot of people off the road.
Four lap courses aren't uncommon globally (as you know).
If you check out the map of the bike route you'll see how straight the road is. Draft busters will be there in full force and they won't spare the ink in their biro's...!!
People will be well briefed at the Race Briefing on Saturday...
U draft - you will get caught.
The road is plenty wide to allow safe overtaking....
U can now look at an image of the road and other important locations
