There's a talk at the National Museum Collins Barracks on Sat 13th 12pm " History in your hand, the story of Irish coinage ". It's for members of the Numismatics Society of Ireland, but you could probably tag along if you showed an interest in signing up. Might be worth your while anyway it's only 20 Euro a year. Also their annual auction is the day before. There's usually books for sale at the auction but if you're a member you can borrow books from the society's library. PM me if you need any info

I've a lot of books which I'm sure cover the subject to some extent, but unfortunately most of them are still packed away since I moved house. I had a quick look through all the Irish numismatics mags and found one with a 4 or 5 page article on gun money. Nothing too extensive though and I'm sure you'll find books which specifically cover it. There was also an advert in this mag from a dealer selling 10x BU 1943 half crowns for 10 pounds each. BU!!!! OMG.

On ebay I regularly see a supplement booklet on Gun Money, think it's from a Spinks mag. They come up now and again, if I see it again I'll let you know. They usually go pretty cheap.

Dont know how much you know already about them but here is all I know; the coins were issued during the Williamite wars 1689 - 91 or so. They were used to pay the Jacobite armies when money had run out, the soldiers could then trade this token money for legal tender once James was returned to power. The coins were made from melted down guns, amongst other things, hence the term 'gunmoney'

I'm not sure what the difference between the two mints is, maybe the Limerick mint operated for longer as Limerick held out longer against William? I have a couple of these coins (from Limerick) they are reasonably inexpensive but I have seen a few of them for sale at crazy prices, probably because you can talk up their history so well.

:) Thanks, I have a lot of books on the subject, (Simon, Lindsay, Nelson and IN plus others(always interested in others)) but nothing that tell or shows the differances between the mints.
