    Hi All,
I'm looking for parts for a Dell Latitude D600. I think the main board may have packed up and I'm wondering where best to find a new one (apart from Dell?)

Basically, what's happening is, the laptop won't switch on at all - With or without charger. Tried a different battery also. When I plug in the charger into the mains, the little green light comes on, when I then plug the charger into the laptop, the light on the charger goes out. Maybe some kind of short in the main board?

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers,

    DC.

Ebay is your best bet though i reckon you should just buy another cheap laptop somewhere and get a USB exclosure for the hard drive of your D600.A motherboard for a laptop is expensive usually and could cost you up to 150 euro.

Thanks for the reply and I completely agree about the new laptop idea, but I use the laptop in a docking station and like the compact size. To replace it with one of similar spec. would cost a lot more than a cheap laptop I think. That's why I'm looking more to getting it fixed...

I only got two D600 recycled in work last month, they both had broken screens.

There is a computer recyling place on the Jamestown Road in Finglas. I'm afraid I don't know the name of the company, but I'm sure they'd be delighted to sell you a part for little or nothing. I've heard a few people saying they got PC's for little or nothing off the company.

Quick google search and I found this:

Maybe give them a call and just ask

anyone know where you find out lists of common problems/fixes with particular laptop motherboards ?

some dell laptops had problems with the power supply connector but that's a mechanical problem and easily

I'm looking at D600 as a project, but looks like it's m/b is dead too the bits I had for it came from another dead D600.

I used to build Dell laptops. Usually the motherboard would come assembled with the rest of the base of the laptop (D600 was before my time but everything I saw there was like this), and it's probably a pig of a job to remove the motherboard from the base so you're probably best off just getting a replacement base. Look for the part number (see here: http://www.used-pcs.com/ProductCart/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=14) on the underside of the base (might be in the battery compartment). There seems to be a lot on eBay anyway.

May be a stupid question, but have you tried reseating the RAM, or even the CPU?

I counted 49 screws to get to the power connector on the bottom of an Inspiron, Toshiba's are just as bad actually I've not seen one that didn't take ages and have at least two or three hidden screws :(

Thanks for the replies folks. I'll give that recycling place a call and see what they say.
As for the board itself, I see that someone has one for sale on eBay:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Dell-Latitude-D600-motherboard-complete-0X2033_W0QQitemZ230311617220QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motherboards_CPUs?hash=item230311617220&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

However, it's not tested and could be broken/have the same problem. There's another D600 board on eBay too with 'power not working'

As for taking the laptop apart, I haven't tried yet, but I've taken laptops apart before so I don't mind removing 49 screws or whatever is on the D600. I just wish I new what the source of the fault was first, or if there was a way to limit the source to specific areas. From what I've heard, it sounds like the mother board. I just have one question, is there anything else power-related outside of the mother board? (similar to a power-supply on a desktop) If not, I'd be fairly confident it's the mobo.

    Cheers,

    DC.
