    No use ringing the Gardai.

If your an AA member ring them.

Otherwise push it off the road and try and fix the problem. If that fails ring a mate to tow you.

Check your insurance. You may have Breakdown cover. See here for half-price AA membership deal.

If you were causing a serious obstruction to traffic the Guards might be able to assist, but likely no more than arranging their tow company to move you (for a fee at that).

If you've got a new-ish car theres a chance that theres still an assist policy from the maker - its 4 years on new Fiats for instance. This would generally be the AA - read your owner handbook to see if there is one.

Expensive warning I think if your car breaks down on the motorway you will be towwed off buy the motorway contractor tow service .He will charge you telephone numbers for this service (figures of E500 plus are floating in the ether ) if your not a member of the normal tow away services such as AA or tow service in Insurance .The only small exception is on those special sections where road works are where they tow you away and if your lucky off the motorway onto the side of the road and leave you there where you can call a cheaper solution like a friend to come tow you whatever.

Best I can see if you don't break down on free ways or no parking places or motorways and can safely park up the car it wont be towed away for a few days giving you a chance to shop around for cheaper repair or tow solutions

Worse is cases like a friend of my mothers. She made a mistake near sandyford and crashed her fualt .A tow company came apon the scene took full advantage of her and the bill came to E2000 for towing storage and scrapping car etc .Car was worth E2000 max so it was scrapping case. If she negosiated tow and scrap deal there and then she would probably have paid less than E500 .When I heard of the full story too late all the money was paid up as I would have said play hard ball and only offer E500 starting with E100.All she had to say was she was 80 no family and paid corpo falt rent so with no assets on the government retirement rates E230 a week (all true ) and they wouldn't ever get their money so better to take E500

Water under the bridge but the tow companies have you by the family jewels if you havent a towing deal insurance and if you break down or crash in the wrong places and your car is blocking the road with nobody to help push it of the road.

...does the NRA not pay for you to be removed from the motorway (but not anything further)? E.g. its your own fault if you agree to a tow from beyond the first safe zone off the motorway.

On the M50 and M11 they will remove your car to secured storage FOC also:
