    Hello,

Niall Keane who posts here is the guy to talk to. He'll most likely see this thread and reply himself...

This guy seems to be the main man in Ireland for San Shou at the moment.

    Yang Dong

Every article I've seen about San Shou features him as a leading player in Ireland.

I think there is some misunderstanding here. A group of clubs who are interested in and practice sanshou have recently come together to promote an Irish scene.
Sanshou is basically a format of competition where any style can participate. It is like a cross between Muay Thai and MMA. Typically fights are 3 X 2 Minute rounds, you can kick, punch and throw, but once it goes to ground, you are stood back up and continue from where you were.
A number of clubs have now come together to start an amateur sanshou national competition. So far we have secured 4 dates, at Best of the Best. Hence the demo last weekend. A belt will be awarded each weight each year.
There are currently Irish sanshou/ sanda fighters fighting internationally in amateur and pro, these lads will not be competing in the amateur league. It is about growing the sport. So persons / clubs wishing to participate can feel safe in "trying out" the format. No one will be fed to the lions; we want to develop sanshou in Ireland. International competition is available to those capable, and financing, sponsorship is being pursued.
The cooperative is being run democratically, with no style preferences, modelled on the GAA, with county, province and national competition. For those of you in Kung Fu, notice the difference, there are no masters only coaches. So far, Mayo, Kildare, Dublin north and South (yes due to population divided), Armagh, Tipperary, and Wexford have teams. As I said all styles are welcome, not just kung fu.
Sanshou has grown recently, is popular in ex-soviet countries, and of course is the national sport of China, so the future looks promising.
For anyone interested in getting involved contact the O.P.

    Regards,

    Niall

Crazymexi (Gary), the OP, is one of your own. Conor and Ken (your coaches) have trained with him at Sifu Dillions.

Hope its going well for you. Isnt San Shou going to be included in some competitions this year?

just curious are knees, elbows and the clinch allowed or is just what the poster above stated(niall i think)

Knees and Elbows are prohibited for striking in amateur sanshou.
However they can be used defensively, i.e. to say block a kick/punch/clinch attempt by blocking/strike the oncomming leg / arm with an knee/elbow. Also it is accepted in international amateur competition, if not officially, to use the knees on the oponents thigh, as long as it looks more like a kick. Its considered a dirty practice, but its out there.

There is a 3 to 5 second clinch rule, depending on competition to apply a throw, or its broken.
In pro sanda the clinch, which has no restrictions also lasts about the same, as from what I've seen repeated knees don't work in the format as sweeps and trips are allowed, unless the receiver has little or no stand up wrestling skills, which would be unheard of in sanshou / sanda training. So I think the real purpose of the time restriction at amateur level is to increase the competitors skill level at fast throws, and to prevent competitors seeking refuge from kicks and punches, and so not developing skills in those areas, by wrestling each other for the duration of the fight.

I enjoy this format, but I would, but I think it also makes it exciting to watch as there is constant changing from striking and wrestling ranges, that save in the case of a knockout continues for the entire scheduled fight.
