Yet another Customs thread...

I've been waiting on this baby to arrive for nearly 3 weeks now. I called An Post last week based on the tracking info (it said it was "on route to customer" on the 26th but I still hadn't seen it by the 28th) and was told it was stuck in customs. Which is fair enough, since I expected it to go through customs, and I'm prepared to pay the duty. The girl in the post office told me I'd get a letter from customs in the next day or so, but that was last Friday and there's still no sign...

They've had my bass for a week now... Should I be getting worried? Which number should I call? There's a list of customs numbers on the revenue.ie website but I don't know which one to contact, I thought I'd ask here since some of you have been through this before! :o

    http://www.revenue.ie/contact/customs.htm

Or is there something else I should do?

Dont have a clue what to do. Go down to the post office again and tell her you still havent gotten anything.

Btw, sweet bass. Love that colour!

Probably held it up so they could get the extra 0.5% of VAT out of you. :p

Usually you'll get the letter from the Customs Dept in a few days. So if you havent got it, its possible its gone lost in the post, or the address (on the parcel) was wrong or illegible.

If there was no indication of value on the item, or a fraudulent value, or the item was marked as 'gift', they may want to see proof of the value of the item. This happened to me recently (with an item that was worth feck all anyway).

You also may need to use the services of a 'clearance agent' (to send in official paperwork, something called a SAD). I never fully dug into the exact reasons behind this, but its happened to me once, and at least one or two others here.

Just contact them using any of the numbers linked there, im sure any of the numbers you ring will put you in touch with the correct one for the particular circumstance.

Forgot I'd posted this, cheers for the replies! As it turned out they didn't bother with a letter & just sent it on, & the postman charged the €50-odd duty at the door. Got it 40mins before I was due to leave town for 3 days gigging round the country - nick of time! :)

Good thing it was in a flight case though, because they absolutely mutilated the packaging!

i got a gibson les paul supreme for $2600 a year ago and the person selling it , i told him to put it down for $500

so if i was caught id pay less duty but also if it got lost i just have $500 claw back

needless to say i got it and the post man wouldnt hand it over till i paid €28 in tax

sweet , when u think waltons have these for €4000

Admitting to tax evasion on a public forum with traceable IP addresses isn't the greatest thing you'll ever do ;)

Tut tut......not giving up all the tax accountable to the government when they are 20 to 8 billion the red.

Not looking forward to the tax on my Ibanez J Custom coming from Japan and all this c**p with a clearance agent and his SAD form.

+1. Sooner or later fey's gonna be in here with a copy of the charter, and his staff of judgement. In before the lock .

To the OP. Sounds like the third number down on this page http://www.revenue.ie/en/contact/customs-division.html is what you're looking for. Outward processing and warehousing. If they cant help you, then just ask what department will and get their number. Good luck!. Dealing with customs is like discussing fiber-optics with the amish .

Clearance agent? You don't need one. Once the shipment gets here it'll go to customs in Portlaoise and they'll smack on whatever charges apply. When the delivery guy comes to the door you pay him.

    Sometimes you do.

I think if the taxable item is above a certain value, that's when you need the clearance agent.

Hmm... it would want to be pretty expensive then. Whats the cut-off?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

I needed to use a clearance agent once (for the SAD form), and I know one or two people here have posted about it happening to them as well.

It was only the once for me and I never found out for definite the exact circumstances that made it happen. I assumed it was like Doc said, above a certain value. Ive heard a cut-off of €650 mentioned, but that can't be right, ive brought in a good few guitars over that value and only once had to use the clearance agent.
