Pentium / AMD Chipsets

    Hello,

I am an IT graduate but never was exposed to much about specific hardware like chipsets. Does anyone have a good knowledge source of chipsets (i.e. clock speeds, FSB etc)?

What confuses me is I have an old desktop with a Pentium Chip in it, running at 3.2 GHz. This desktop is old, maybe 4 years, then I look at new chipsets (take for example the most powerful mobile chipset is around 2.8GHz) and the speed is less. Is this because of the dual core technology that each core is 2.8GHz thus improving the overall speed?

    Very confused...

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I have looked!

The architecture of CPU's has changed considerably, even if the clock rate hasn't. A P4 at 3.2 GHz is heavily outperformed by a Core2 or Core i7 at 3.2GHz. Also you're misusing the term chipset which is usually applied to the supporting components on the motherboard.
