Dunno if this has been tried before but would there be any interest in getting one of these going as a bit of craic? Force some of us the put our fake money where our mouths are. I'll keep track of everyone's score and we can have a little mini league.

We can iron out the details later just seeing if there'd be any interest. Reckon we'd need 10 to make it worthwhile. This is the website I was thinking of using:
    http://www.bullbearings.co.uk/

Edit: I registered and found this out so should be even easier for everyone to stay involved:
Don’t forget that in addition to participating in the main BullBearings stock and spread betting leagues you are able to set up your own private leagues and invite friends and colleagues to join in. You can choose your own league name and you’ll get access to a free private league table where all your league members can view their performance. It’s a great way to get some friendly competition going!

    Great idea - I'm in.

Should a bit of craic alright

    Edited to delete :

    . . . .

( Why not make it simpler and anyone who is interested picks 10 stocks from January 1st 2009 and we run it until December 31st 2009.

All stocks from anywhere in the world, with returns held at constant currency. Winner is the person whose portfolio has the best return over the year. There should be some incentive involved tho imo )

    . . . .

    Bullbearings looks better though

Sorry I've not been around an awful lot lately, but would ye be interested in placing a wager on this in support of charity? Something like 25% of the pot to the winner and the rest to the Boards-supported Santa Strike Force?

Give it all to charity IMO

Although I didn't know there was money on it at all.

But if there is give it all to charity

Kind of defeats the purpose of a competition:confused:

Yup if it were to happen, I'd recommend you donate what you can (that can be €0) and the winner gets e.g. 25% of the pot (to encourage everyone to be generous with the donations!)

How so? I didnt think we'd have money involved at all but if we do I'm happy to give a percentage (1-100, I dont mind) to charity. It'll be the bragging rights I'm interested in!!

Yeah, I'm the same to be honest. I don't have to time to concentrate too much on this and if there's a ton of money on it I will end up doing that.

Peronally I don't mind playing if there's a prize fund or not, however I do think that if we're paying to play, then there should definitely be some sort of prize fund.

pocketdooz, I'm guessing from your sig that you play a fair bit of poker. Surely if you entered a tournie in which there were no prized then you wouldn't really care if you won or not.

25% of a pot or whatever might encourage things to be a bit less haphazard than just gearing up to max and buying the most volatile CFDs.

Yeah, I get your point. I'll let you all decide - just let me know what it is and I'm in

Would it not be better to run the competition alongside the 09' calender year? i.e put work into picking your stocks and then start on the 2nd of Jan 2009.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 711 ✭✭✭who007

tOTAL NEWBIE ON THIS HERE - CAN i PLay too??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Idu

Sorry had no internet access over the weekend.

For all those who want to jump in and join the login details for the league are as follows:

    League Name: Boards Fantasy Stocks
    Password: boardsie

Also I'm with Stepbar with starting this in Jan and running it for the year.

Anyone who has had a bulbearings demo account previously can you make sure that you have reset your starting cash to 100,000 like everyone else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭pocketdooz

    I agree - let's start it Jan1 so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,237 ✭✭✭georgem25

Is it not a valid question? If it's not real money there would be a temptation to throw it all into those and see what happens/.. big money could be made (virtual money)

This argument has been done to death be it real/fake money. There's plenty of other threads he can bring it up. Leave it out of here and anyway look at his post history - just looking to stir things up

Absolute trolling IMO - keep it out of this thread

    :o

So we start 1 Jan - 31 Dec 2009. And I assume we can trade all other products as per the BB site (currencies, CFDs etc) not just stocks?

I'll have to investigate this because I think that each variety is stored in a different league table so I guess we would be just sticking to stocks.

I'll send around a PM to everyone who has expressed interest a few days before we are due to start on Jan 1st outlining rules etc etc etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Idu

PM sent to all who have set up their accounts.

Sorry for not having organised us throwing a few quid on this, guys. Real life, etc.

I don't think I'll partake this round. Why? Because I don't have time to do proper research at the moment, would thus do crap, and I don't want ye laughing at me :D. I hear Anglo-Irish Bank are a bargain at the mo, though.

Best of luck, and keep us updated :)
