    Hi,

Am looking to head away for new years, was looking at liverpool(edinburgh flights too expensive). Has anyone ever been there before for NYE? A friend told me that all the bars were closed on New Years Day...is this the case across the UK? Hoping to go over on the 31st for 3 nights, basically a bit of a booze up. Any recommend any other places?

    Thanks

There is no specific days that pubs have to close in the UK like with the christmas and good friday rubish that we have in Ireland. It's just down to if the publican can be bothered to open on a particular day or not. New Years Day would have been sunday opening hours though, but that just means they stop serving half an hour earlier, unless they have applied for an extension for specific days.

i am off to berlin for NYE (biggest new years party in europe, 1 million people next to the brandenburg gate). We booked a while back though, flights are still cheap enough with ryanair if book:

one way to berlin from dublin on december 30th or 31st
one way to frankfurt (hahn) from berlin (with ryanair)
one way from frankfurt (hahn) to dublin (again with ryanair)

that cost us 50euro return in total but obviously will be alot more expensive now

Don't forget, licensing laws differ in scotland to England. (There is no such thing as UK law). That would apply in England and probably in Scotland, but I wouldn't be 100% sure.

If you want Edinburgh try flights to Glasgow or Prestwick and get the train to Edinburgh.

I thought they just had the longer opening hours come in years before England/ Wales did. Pretty sure that they don't have any shut days like here though in Scotland.

I know the longer hours were in (Glasgow was the first city to introduce 24 hour licences I believe). before England, not sure what they are like for closing pubs though. Hogmany is a whole different thing up there:D

I'm surprised you can even price flights for something thats 12 months away.

Yep, that actually scares me though.

I have vague recollections of wandering along Princes Street at around 9am at New Year '96(?) with a totally inadequate coat on, as it was snowing at the time, and almost empty bottle of whiskey in one pocket and the same of some other spirit in the another pocket and no idea where I was supposed to be. Less than 36hours previously I'd been in Bristol expecting a quiet New Year.
