when are you thinking of going and where, roughly?

if its europe then I'd go for anywhere you can get a cheap flight to, Barcelona, Madrid, Budapest, Venice (Although you may need your wellies)

I think it's hard to beat Paris for a romantic weekend. When is your anniversary? Air Lingus are doing flights for €29.99 at the moment, as for hotels, you can pay anything from €80 - €sky's the limit! You should get a decent hotel in a good central location for €100-€120 per night. Despite what some people say, I always find Paris good value for dining and attractions, alcohol is cheap if you stick to French wine (beer is very pricey though).

January sales in London...every girls dream (Every blokes worst nightmare:D)

Or, take her to Windsor and book a meal at the Fat Duck.

Could bring her to a show in Londons West End too.... is Dirty Dancing still on there?
You should be able to get good deals at good hotels too.

I loved Edinburgh (female point of view). Only thing is it's very cold and windy in winter, so I don't know if it's the best for January.

Take her to Paris you cheapskate! Guaranteed to have a great time and very romantic. She'll love it (and you).

From a female point of view, I would be DELIGHTED to be taken ANYWHERE as a suprise anniversary trip! I don't think your gf would be disappointed at all.

If you are only going for a weekend (ie 2 nights), I think Edinburgh would be lovely. It is a beautiful city, as you mentioned it has a lovely mix of history, nightlife, culture, shopping and dining. Going any further for just a weekend would seem a bit pointless, Edinburgh is nice and close and you don't have to spend your whole weekend travelling.

Book as nice a hotel as you can afford (preferably one with an open fire in the lobby) and it won't matter that it's cold outside!
