Forgettable & Rememberable matches

For me the two most forgettable Springbok matches were the RWC2003 pool match against England 26 - Boks 6 - just after hammering Samoa we thought we'd have a chance and were brought down to earth deservedly coached by the then "Kamp Staaldraad" idiot Rudolph Straeuli.

Second match was 2005 against the rampant Irish back in 2006 - what a hammering. I was out with my Irish mates and never did they let me forget who was winning.

The first rememberable was the hammering of England in RWC2007 pool match: 36-0 to boks - I still enjoy England's new jersey

Second was the win at "House of Pain" in this year's 3N - first winning for us in NZ since 1999.

What was your team(s) forgettable/rememberable moments?

Most forgettable game? Too many to mention. I've forgotten them.

Most memorable game: 'That' Bledisloe Test in 2000. Aussie 21-0 down after 20 mins. Going in at half time drawn. The lead flipped and flopped til the Kiwis finally went over for the winning score. Jonah was on fire that day.
Despite the result, probably the greatest game of rugby union in the modern era. Thats how the game should be played.

2000 Six Nations Ireland vs France when BOD got a hat-trick of tries

    Forgettable :
2003 Six Nations grand slam decider Ireland vs England

Funny that, i'd class that in the forgettable end of things ;) especially seeing as I was going out with a Munster girl at the time :P

Leinster mauling Munster up the pitch at the RDS sticks in my mind. ^^

Two things in that I always marvel at:

First Mal's pass to send BOD down the outside channel for his first. Humps would have been proud of that pass.

Then, the pick up for the third try is ridiculous. He must be going at least 80% of flat out.

My most memorable match is probably Ireland - Australia. Pissing rain, 18 - 9 to us. I was in the old east terrace. Went home horse and was laid up for about a week with the flu because of it. So worth it though. I can still hear the fields echoing around the stadium, the place was rocking. And Irish Permanent had given out Green Macs (which given the conditions, everyone had on) so the place was greened out to the max.

Most forgettable match. There are loads, maybe Leinster Wasps in the qf a few years back or Ireland Italy in this years 6n....

Was in Lansdowne for that one too! How can people play rugby in these conditions is beyond me... Great win for Ireland! And I didn't get sick! :P

I couldn't believe it when I saw it was up. incredible stuff. The funny thing was, I forgot who won it when I started to watch it there last week. It made it even better viewing again!

The same place has the France New Zealand semifinal from 1999. Even better!!

It's also got French commentary. If you think Murray Mexted is biased, and he is, you should hear these guys!!

One of the most memorable (rememberable?) things for me on watching that replay is how much one player was responsible for New Zealand's defeat. He was the Number 14 that day. Twice his opposite number ran through to set up and score tries when he was AWOL.

Then on a few other occasions he either turned over the ball cheaply from which France went on to score a dropped goal,(19mins) poofed out of a catch because a French player was bearing down on him (51 mins--listen to the commentary on that one if you speak any French at all, they don't half take the piss out of him) and dropped a pass in the most ham-fisted fashion from which the French fly hacked on to score the clinching try(1hr 17min). That's a total 0f 27 points he was responsible for.

Wonder what became of him ;)

    Excile in France...

In fairness Wing was not really his position once he switched to centre he was responsible for alot of good tackles and tries!

The greatest ever rugby test that one. The way this feckin' game should be played.

    Exile in France? That figures.

I'm surprised they haven't given him the freedom of the country. :D

Getting back on topic before some pants-wetting Mod steps in and accuses us of "irrelevant crap".

Most memorable matches for me would be, in no particular order:

    1992 New Zealand 24 Ireland 21
A third choice team from the nation which had been whitewashed in the 5N went to New Zealand as lambs to the slaughter but nearly pulled off a sensational victory. If the great Ronnie Carey (who?) had not dropped an attempted intercept pass in the last minute, we might have won.

    1993 Ireland 17 England 3

England turned up on the last day of the season needing only to exceed France's margin of victory (also assured) over Scotland the same day to win the championship. It wasn't a question of who was going to win, it was just points difference.
Oh yeah! Ireland played them off the park, tackled everything that moved. Pat O'Hara was immense. Elwood kicked his goals. Then finally Mick Galwey crashed over in the North West Corner where all Castle Island men who played for Ireland have scored tries to seal it. His sister ran onto the pitch and kissed him. I enjoyed going in to work in London the next day!

    1980 Ireland 21 Wales 7

The moment we knew the great Welsh team of the 70s was dead. Ireland's first win over them in 10 years. They had lost narrowly to England earlier that year playing mostly with 14 men after Paul Ringer had been sent off. No excuses possible here though. Ireland smashed them. Moss Keane, another Castle Island legend was at his rampaging, snorting, ball tucked under his arm charging best.

    2000 France 15 Ireland 27
Irish victories in Paris (or St Denis) are as rare as hen's teeth. Ones in which we outscore them by three tries to one are even rarer. To see it was marvellous. To be there was heaven.

And speaking as a neutral...two world cup semi finals when France beat Australia in 1987 and New Zealand in 1999. Can't remember the scores but it was France playing at their very best and coming back from the dead twice to make the final. Screw "southern hemisphere" snobbery. The country whose rugby, played at its best, comes closest to aesthetic perfection is France.

Least memorable must be 1992 Ireland 10 Scotland 18. I know I was there but I can't remember a damn thing about it, and it's the only international I've ever been to that I can say that about. It must have been REALLY ****e.

    2007 6N Ireland -v- France (punishment for 2000!) :D

You are a horrible horrible man.

    Ones to remember:
Munster v Gloucester. When Munster had to get the bonus point.

    One to forget:
    See frenchies quote or
Ireland v Aussie on 1991 RWC, great game but the try in the last minute sent a v young rattlehead home crying from the game :(

Correction. 1992 v Scotland was certainly a dire game, so dire that the Irish team was booed off the park at the end of it. But I wasn't at it. And I can remember how crap it was.

The one that I was at but can't remember, so dull was it, was Scotland Ireland in 1986. All I can remember was that Phil Orr was brought back for that one, having been dropped for two matches that season and as it was his 50th cap, he ran out on his own before the rest of the team.

That's it. That's all there was to remember. Scotland won 10-9. (I looked it up)

Ireland France where we came back in the second half and nearly nicked it.
Ireland NZ when Stringer kicked them the ball and they snatched it, so close to beating them on their own pitch.

forgettable; grand slam decider v England when we were well beaten.

    Memorable; Lions-Australia 1st test in 2001, incredible.

Forgettable; 'Black sunday' Leinster Munster SF in 2006, bad bad memories.
