My mother has decided to get the brother a laptop seeing as he's been hinting since starting college. She, of course, turned to me as I know stuff about computers. Thing is I'm not at all sure of what to look for spec wise in a laptop these days.

I've had a quick look at Dell, laptopsdirect.ie and komplett.ie but I'm not sure what's a good one and whats not.

Budget would be €500. Can anyone recommend a machine?

Are Asus laptops any good? I've also used HP and Acer machines in the past and couldn't fault them - are they still up to scratch?
