How much is your golf sub for 2009

In these tightening money times am wondering what is the typical sub these days for traditional clubs (not the big share purchase buy-in type). Excluding the old Dublin city courses which are out of my financial league even if I had the contacts to join, what is typical within 1 hours drive of the M50 in any direction? Was looking at the GUI website notices page and there a re a few, but guess there are many with open membership that arent publicising it as such.
Anyone know of where there is good value to be had ?

Sorry I can't help but I have noticed how expensive it is to join a course around Dublin.

I have just left a course near Belfast that is in the top 10 or so in Northern Ireland and it cost about €1000 per year for full membership and it has 2 18 hole courses.

€650 and do you know what, I can't justify it. I can pay it but with a young family I'm only getting out maybe 10-15 times a year and every time it takes planning and cajoling with the missus. I'll let it slide for a few years and let the kids get to school. Play the odd society outing and classic, that'll do me for '09

€810 + €30 CLUB levy + €19 GUI levy in Gowran Park, Kilkenny.

The same as last 2 years but they are giving advance warning that it will have to rise for 2010

I read something the other day saying that alot of clubs will be upping their annual fees this year.

around €4500 all in, including GUI, VAT and €500 bar levy.

Can't afford it for 2009 so i'm leasing it out for a year.

    Luttrellstown Golf Club.

By the way, its twice that for a new member.

    Fcuking ridiculous.

Holy cow! That's a mad amount for golf (unless you can obviously afford it). Much prefer to be a member somewhere affordable and maybe treat myself to a few rounds every year at some of the best courses in the country instead...

    Blimey, thats off the graph!
And I was thinking the 900-1000 range outside Dublin was steep. Was hoping to find some where nearer to the €500 mark but maybe it just isnt there. Looks like clubs could be in for a difficult time: people leaving to cut expenses, clubs raising fees further to cover the shortfall, more people leaving because of the big rises etc.
I might be set for a couple of years of greenfee and society golf. There does seem to be some good value there and it might get better if clubs are pushed to attract casual golfers.

Waterford Castle, it's about 1280 + 100 bar levy. Steep in times. Prob the most expensive in the area and it's not a members club either, company called Cendant own it.

Sandwich, somewhere like Rathdowney would be fairly accessible off the motorway as it's near Portlaoise, mentioned on here from a few sources as a decent track... around the €600 mark.
It might be an alternative to going completely down the society route if you could get out there often enough.

Was 1900 (includes bar levy and GUI) last year. I reckon it'll go up this year, the thinking is that the green fees will probably be down for 2009 so they need more money from somewhere.

    Thats obscene money.
Nearly 90 euro a week to play golf .
Considering this country's climate and that the golfing season is actually only around 8 months of the year at best you'd want to be nearly out every few days to get value out of that.

Haven't seen 2009's yet, but we pay approx €860 Family membership. That includes GUI+LGUI fees. I think single membership was €595 for '08.

you should look at moate / mount temple - they are well within an hour of dublin on the motorway and are decent enough courses.

€1888 which includes €200 for the bar/restaurant. It was about €1600 last year so it's gone up a good bit.

I'm hearing this quite a bit, clubs are seeing green fees drop off, members leaving etc so are upping subs. It's shortsighted imo, they will likely lose a few more members when the straw breaks the camels back as it were...

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Quite possibly but my feeling is that they will likely lose some people anyway (even at current levels) so maybe they are factoring that into the increase so that those who remain carry the can...

true, I just think 10-20% rises might make things worse for them rather than better. When people aren't willing to pay the current prices, raising them seems like the wrong thing to do.

Of course a lot of them are in difficult situations so I'm not sure what their other options are apart from looking for more members or green fee income..

Ours is being rumoured to drop from €1600 plus €150 behind the bar, to €1500 with no compulsory bar money. There's also 10% discount for renewals paid by 1st Jan, so €1350.

No increase this year or levy in Lucan. Hoping to take in 20 new members next year. Financial packages in place to help spread joining fee over 3-5 years.

€800. Woodstock in Ennis. I live about 200m from the first tee so I get value for money during the year!

Such a tight first hole you live near! Been a while since I played there...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

You're not wrong!! Scary first shot. Getting tighter all the time as they have planted trees all the way up both sides right from the tee ... used to be you were only screwed if you went off line by more than 15 meters either side from about 150m in. You're a brave man if you hit a driver off this tee. 5 or 3 wood for me. Happy to walk off with bogey and 2 points tbh.

Ha ya we played Fred Daly there last year and I had no idea where I was hitting so I just smashed away with driver and was flicking in to the green but the guy I was playing was staring at me like I had two heads! I only realised how tight it was when I got up to the green!

€12k to join and €900 approx annual sub after that. I believe the 12k can be spread over 3-5 years. Give them a shout and see what they say. If you're still interested I can organize a proposer & seconder for you if required.
