What's even more surprising is a few years ago most of retailers wouldn't even acknowledge it was coming, or a threat.

I did a thesis during my degree in IT that incorporated the possible impact of media sales due to online servies. I sent surveys around to 40 or 50 Irish and Uk owned retailers and I think it was less than 10% agreed that the latest trends would affect sales substantially.

    What year was that?

It's a natural progression.. people want the music in different more convenient formats and the ability to purchase from home/work.

Hey it's karma working since CD's killed off vinyl :p

But at lease Vinyl to CD was an increase in fidelity (warmth etc. is another debate depending on your "tone" persuasion) iTunes is one 10 to 20th of the quality! From the demise of Concorde to youtube to itunes, AAC & mp3 we are going backwards in quality to favour convenience.

I find that a lot of times with cd's that I buy them and the only time they get played is when I transfer them to my computer. They then get left on the shelf to gather dust.

Not that long ago, probably towards the end of 05!

"impact of media sales due to online servies".... wow I have to stop drinking before I post -
I meant "The impact of online services on media sales" ..I think!

Jeez! Talk about head in the clouds?
I remember telling my local record shop he'd better think about a new business model in '98.

    Naturally he didn't listen.

I remember paying 25punt per CD back in the day. Can you imagine what the price would be now after inflation and currency conversion and the rest if there was no pressure from the net. Doesn't bare thinking about!

This brings us back to the point of the artist having to make the physical CD release worth buying, due to extras and imited edition packaging etc... Like Reznor is doing with NIN.

Artists, Labels and Stores really need to get up of their ar$es and do something.

  • Subscribers Posts: 696 ✭✭✭FlipperThePriest

    Absolutely!

Maybe a decent percentage off gig tickets when you buy the new album! Think something like that'd work.

I wouldn't buy a CD really, unless it was a REALLLLY good one. Why bother when I'd just be ripping it to MP3 anyway? Might as well download it.

Some things never change though, the artist is still getting only 10 cents of the 99 cents from iTunes. I'll admit to being a pirate (yarrr) but it's 1/4 not wanting to give Apple most of my money, 1/4 being anti-DRM, 1/4 not having a credit card and the other 1/4 being broke as ****.

I haven't bought a CD in years, I have switched from record shops to Itunes.

I would say most Itunes customers have a lot more music at home on mp3 than they ever would have had by sticking to cd (if you know what I mean).

This makes me think that even though cd sales have fallen, the sale of music probably has risen.

I wonder what cut of an Itunes download the artist gets in comparison to CD?

I the sale of music probably has risen.

i still buy cds.i like to be able to hold something in my hands after i've paid money for it...i'm also limited to how much music i can buy at one time beacuse it costs more, so i can appreciate it more.

you know that itunes has nearly all new releases without drm now?

drm was a right pain in the ass!

oh and i haven't bought a cd in a long time. although i'm buying more music than ever, yet spending less money on music overall. God bless the internet.

only time i've bought a cd in the past three years was to have something to listen to on the drive home from the shop.

not suprised to be honest, with amount of downloading going on,also remember reading about the consumer association getting complaints about the amount of greatest hits cds that get brought out every year for christmas, price has part to play too,i mean who wants pay €30-40 for a cd/dvd from material thats 30 years old, just because it has "classic" written on it by the critics and record companies

I reckon sales of music will increase because of the internet. Apple are selling their ipods by the million. Anyone who has an ipod has a few thousand songs on it.

More and more people are getting access to the internet, people are buying not just new music but probably more of the music they grew up with.

The buying of older music could be just a nostalgia thing or it could mean that the music being produced today is not floating peoples boats.

I think music sales has a rosy future.

music today is frankly ****e to be honest, well maybe a few odd exceptions, but mostly its ****e,talent is just disposable now, looking at x-factor,the acts are here today and gone tommorow,or its mostly just 10 year olds making some of the awful acts number one,but the supermarkets have been blamed too for making some of the unusual acts number 1

be honest guys those who said aint bought a cd in years what your really saying is

    I downloaded it ....

bet you've at least tried P2P

i buy cd's but where I used to buy 4-5 a month its more like 4-5 a year.

and I agree the CDs quality although clear has less tonal quality than vinyl.
(thats because we are analogue animals not digital) your ears

maybe the next format will fix it

ive listened to a stereo reel to reel tape before, and i found it clearer and more crisp than an audio cd version

iTunes is one 10 to 20th of the quality!

Its much smaller in file size, but its not 1/10th of the quality.

A decent mp3 from 192 K upwards is indistinguishable from a CD for all practical/enjoyment purposes. Maybe some geeks could listen really closely and hear the difference, but most people cant and dont care.

I honestly don't understand why you'd want to download new albums. I still buy cds from my favourite bands as usually they provide a really cool package, with extras as well as nice artwork, lyrics, and all of the credits and thanks whcih are always interesting to read (you can't get all of this on the net). Yes, it will gather dust in my collection after I put it on the IPod, but I often like to go back and dig out the cds to see the artwork and check production credits, etc.

For instance, the Star One re-release had a phenomental bonus disk with a Hawkwind medley:
    http://www.ayreon.com/starone/so_albums.html

And there are lots of examples like the above. I currently have a list of about 10 cds I want to get, and I will not be downloading any of them as most of the artists are on smaller indie labels, or CDBaby.

That said, I will download stuff of larger bands where I want to give them a listen before committing to buy stuff. Usually, I will end up buying their stuff at some point, but no harm in downloading a few albums every now and then to see if it's my thing.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of the CD package, and having a nice collection of CDs that I can go back to. I take it I'm very much in the minority, huh?
