What can one make of the Scrap dealers adventure in Dublin yesterday...

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/scrap-dealer-with-no-head-for-heights-hits-two-bridges-1556181.html

This potential disaster appeared to travel quite some distance unimpeded by any official interest in spite of a fairly well developed network of CCTV etc

By the sound of things our man is not too bothered by the publicity and I suppose it is a Free Market economy we live in..:)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

1 man, 45 cameras and a front desk. Sorry I missed him the second he came over the bridge. I must be useless at my job :(

Nope Carlito, not having a dig at you at all at all at all....BUT the DCC Camera system surely has a few pairs of eyes too ?

In addition it seems this individual performed something akin to St Paul`s conversion on the road to Damascus when he failed to clear Westland Row bridge a manouvere which appears to have attrracted some degree of public concern.

He does appear to have covered quite a bit of ground with a load which even LOOKS dangerously stacked.

This incident appears to reinforce the view that current GS resources in the City are seriously overstretched from a "normal" policing context.

The City currently portrays itself as an EU Capital of some note,it`s surely high-time we policed it in a similar vein ? :)

(And don`t even think of suggesting a shoot out the tyres response :D:D:D )

He could have just let the air out of the tyres and Karl could have given him some of his spare hot air on the other side!

He could get banned from driving for a time. He's simply a danger to those around him going on like that.

Yeah but did they even detain him or take correct details?

It was reported that he gave his address as a roundabout in Santry so if that's all the info the garda have, it'll be hard to track him down.

I'm realy hoping that report wasn't accurate, if so sure everyone stopped at a checkpoint with no insurance could do the same

Thats just plain crazy.. he is in the wrong lane, his tax is out, numberplate is the wrong font, and i think one of his tyres is a little bald. The guy in the white car should really know better. :D

And dont get me started about the driver taking a photo of the whole thing while driving

This driver should actually be commended for his ingenuity for getting all those trucks in perfect alighment, all the same colour and he even showed consideration by putting a reflective triangle on the back.

If memory serves correctly I think this was only reported after the guy left and they realised his insurance was bull so he was well on his way by then. Also, it came in as simple a truck hitting a bridge so no one knew what was really happening. Hopefully a reg plate was obtained.

You mean the one beside the legal one on the n32 or is there another one?

I`m unsure if there is any longer a vaildity to the term "Illegal" when referring to such things as Halting Sites.

Irrespective of what the Statute Book may say, there is a fairly serious reluctance to define any dubious activity by minority groupings as Illegal per se.

Whilst there are doubtlessly members of such groupings,be they native or foreign, who DO wish for a "better" more "settled" way of life, there are also sizeable numbers who, whilst prepared to accept the State`s financial assistance in it`s many forms, remain absolute in their refusal to take the responsibility which acccompanies it.

For many folks there is a certain benefit from having "No Fixed Abode" which virtually guarantees a level of anonymity from those who would seek payment of bills, summons servers,Jehovahs Witnesses and Charity Clothes collectors...

Question is,at what point does a State have to INSIST on conformance from it`s citizens before it takes action to ensure it..???

Not an easy question class..????????

    Racist.

I thought his post was fairly accurate TBH. Care to elaborate with any positive experiences you have had with our NFA brethren?

Like I say,Not an easy question and most certainly not one with a monosyllabic answer.
However,to address what I assume Terrontress is implying.

If my questioning of the behavioural norms of any social grouping can be taken as Racist then so be it

My own definition of Racist, perhaps simplistic but mine nonetheless,is the belief that a person is superior in any way simply by virtue of their colour, creed or inclination.

I am quite happy to acknowledge that there are millions of people out there who are vastly superior to myself in every way,and they are Black,Yellow,Muslim,Asian,Gay or any one of a hundred other DIFFERENT groupings.

I am happy to acknowledge myself as I am,my beliefs, likes and detestations are all my own personal stuff.
I do not seek to alter any other persons views in any way and I am equally grateful when I encounter another person with differing views who affords me the same largesse.

Perhaps my inherent conformist streak limits my understanding and tolerance of others ?...If so then it`s another black mark agin me and a stretch in the sin-bin :(

The Question I asked however still hangs there out in the ether.....
At what point does a State have to INSIST on conformance from it`s citizens before it takes action to ensure it..???

I would have assumed on first reading that terras comment was in jest but lacking the smiley to make it abvious.

I would have thought that a one word answer to a well thought out post could not seriously be made

From Eoghan Harris`s column in todays Sunday Independent......
Finally, I find the lecture on accountability I have been looking for. In her 2006 BBC Reith talk on "Trust", Professor Onora O'Neill, the philosopher and principal of Newenham College, Cambridge, had this to say: "Avoiding complaints becomes a central institutional goal in its own right. We are heading towards defensive medicine, defensive teaching and defensive policing."

I doubt there is a doctor, teacher or garda in Ireland who would not agree.

Now I can take EH or leave him but he does by times stimulate thought and his use of this little quote is just that.......Thought provoking......At least I hope it is :):):)
