When i get going im thinking of going to some business parks and leaving flyers under car window wipers there.Would i need permission to do this?
Same question for shopping centre car parks and the like?

I could hand them in a reception and ask them to maybe tell their employees to take one but i have a feeling they might go straight into the bin!

afaik its not illegal to distribute flyers in this way,its been done often to me and ive never heard of anyone being prosecuted for anything by putting fliers on cars,if the car owners decide to throw them away then id imagine they would be ones breaking the law by littering

you will have to be prepared for 90%+ of them to get thrown away anyway
    so dont worry about that

its the small percentage that dont throw em away that u will get your sales from anyway

    OP
Ive had a small bit of hassle in the past putting flyers on car windows as one person claims we broke his wiper. I done the car myself and i aint a retard so no, he was a scum bag only looking a few bob.

But on the littering side of things, i think that if your flyers end up all over the car park at tesco or the church yard, you are the responsible one. Same as handing flyers out on streets.

But dont be discouraged as flyers are a great form of advertising in mailshot form or insertion into the local papers.
Lets say you do 10,000 x DL full colour, 2 sides @ 295 euro <snip> and you get even 5% customer return for your effort, thats 50 customers. Not too bad at all.

Unless your selling winning lottery tickets, you must assume a large number will end up in the bin. Another very good method of advertising is fridge magnets - i suppose that depends on what you selling.

Mod Edit [GS]: Don't try to advertise again

    .

What about the other 95% you've just pissed off by putting junk mail on their cars? They'll never buy from you for that reason alone. You're cutting off a huge part of your market before you even start.

You're no better than a spammer if you engage in this type of marketing.

    Goes both ways.

yes would highly advise against those tactics.

I know it's probably not the best way of advertising but the some of the peolple who would be working in business parks would be my target customers.I guess i don't need permission then?

Even if i just got a few customers from it i think it would be worth it.
Obviously i don't want to litter the place or annoy anyone.

it will annoy almost everyone. You would be better dropping the flyers into them personally. I hate having anything put on my car.

Flyers are a highly overrated form of advertising. "Say you get 5% business from them", who says?, statistics like this are meaningless.

Are you offering a deal with the flyer at least? Then you can quantify just how successful (or not) your efforts were. Offer them something in return for not throwing the flyer away(15% off, free first time, whatever). Also consider the quality of the flyer. Is it black and white on cheap paper, or is it glossy and colourful? Be imaginative!

For me, it would have to be a very tempting offer not to simply bin your annoying and unrequested junk mail.

I hate that crap on my car and I don't want strangers touching my windscreen wipers.

    5% return??

    thats ridiculous.

you'd be lucky with a return of between .1% and .5%

and only if you distibute loads

Dublin City Council littering fine is currently 150 euro... per flyer.

    Not worth it tbh.

NO just don't go that route.

    Its time heavy
    Polluting
    Boring
    Negative
    Non targeted
    More likely to alienate

You are a closet traffic warden:cool:

    Hadn't heard of 0.1% - 0.5% return on flyers,
most people I've spoken to think it's around 2%.

Distributing Flyers by putting them on Cars is an Offence under the littering law and councils can charge upto 150 euro per offending Article.

I have a friend who does takeaway food. He was fined for a carton dropped over two miles from his premises

If you drop flyers into offices and are very nice to receptionist and its of interest it will probably end up on notice board in canteen.

Hang on a second - it DOES depend on your target market. What the product is and who it will appeal to?

How can you say .1 to 2% when the product could be anything from burberry scarves to plastic surgery?

Anyway think of the negative impact on your company and brand.......

In the last two months, we're getting 6 pieces of junk (flyers) each day.

What do you think of distributing leaflets/flyers by mail (to households)? Are there any restrictions/fines?
We receive a few in our post but I have no idea if there's any special requirement for the distributor (in this case- let's call it "the seller").

We recently distributed flyer's onto car windows in Naas, and got charged by three separate litter wardens for littering. €100 per warden. regards Oliver

So it seems that leaving flyers behind wipers isn't the best idea.

And how about distributing them on a street, by hand? What one needs to do to be legal about it?

Street is ok - litter fines are still a hangover, make sure you clean up as you go (people throw them away - not into bins - you get fines). In trems of material - other laws - no offensive material, cant advertise an illegal good/service etc

I distributed 100's of flyers with the offer of 10% off if returned got not a single flyer back. Learnt my lesson not to bother word of mouth is best or if you have Harvey Norman's money spend it on TV ads

Word of mouth is all good but for a new/start up business has to get a few customers first.I've given out about a thousand flyers in the last 2 weeks and not had any business from them yet.Not sure should i just continue and give out another few thousand or try a different route

At this point i wouldn't put an ad in the paper or the likes as it costs too much for me and is only visible for a short amount of time.I have a website and have been trying adwords, got some enquries but no business,i actually think it was just my competition asking for prices

I know some people don't like getting flyers,i've seen the amount in some letter boxes when i was delivering my own,it feels like your just adding to a useless paper pile.I thought there would be more cost effective ways to advertise but right now im stuck between flyers and adwords.I was thinking of getting my van sign written but im a bit hasty to get that done until i start getting some business.Anyhow i will continue on with the flyers......i think, unless i can come up with something else.I suppose you gotta spend money to get money.....even though i've spent a fair bit now and got none in return :(
