cardio or weights for initial weight loss?

I've put on a good bit of weight over the past year and a half, and was probably a stone overweight even at that. So I've about 2-3 stone to lose.
I'm going back to the gym (let it slip for a good while). What I'm wondering is that for the initial weight loss period (will obviously be watching my diet too), should I just be concentrating on cardio, fat-burning stuff? Is there any point in toning up muscles that are covered in layers of fat?

You build the muscle underneath. Building muscle uses up calories. So on days you are not lifting you are still using calories up building muscle, and then maintaining this extra muscle.

Lifting is great for boosting your metabolism. Bear in mind you really want to lost FAT not weight. i.e. my wieght remained static for over a year, but I got thinner, building muscle and losing fat at the same rate.
