Help me choose an amp + 5.1 speakers (links inside)

    Hiya,

I can't decide which way to go and I hope someone can help me out.
I am considering two options at the moment:

    1) All in one amp and speaker set, like this one:

    SONY HT SF1300

    2) Seperate amp and speakers:

    a) considering these two amps:

    Sony - STR-DG520 5.1 HDMI

    Yamaha RX-V363BL 5.1

    - anyone has experience with any of them? what are their advantages and disadvantages?

    b) I can't really find any surround speaker sets that would be a good match (both visually and technically) for any of the two amps above. I will be using them for movies, PS3 games and music. I'm not looking for high end speakers, just something decent enough that will let me enjoy stereo music as well as 5.1 in games and movies. Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

I don'thave any experience of either of the systems you've linked to, but you could also consider this, in the same kind of price bracket:
    SONY HT-DDWG800 Home Cinema System

. if you do a search here, I think you'll find good reports from people who have this system, it has the advantage of HDMI switching, wich gives you some scope for the future, and you could upgrade the speakers later of you wanted to. In general, I would recommend a separate amp and speakers rather than an all-in-one, it usually offers more flexibility, more options to connect different devices to it and better sound quality.

    Separates, definitely.

With respect to those who have chosen them, all-in-one DVD 5.1 systems are quite limited for inputs, sound* and flexibility.

    * Even entry-level 5.1 systems can sound much better than most TVs can on their own, but separates (even entry-level) can potentially sound even better again.

    No arguing boys!

After reading AVforums I'm going for Yamaha DSPAX-763 and Jamo A102 HCS5. Only took me two weeks ;)

I'm just coming back to this thread now to get some more info on the Sony deal vs the Yam deal.

Please pardon my confusion, but who was the above directed at?

The remark, it seems, was directed at me - fell under my radar at the time

If someone cares to read the thread referred to by ohm-ed, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055414842, he was the person who asked for (and got) the advice, as opposed to giving it to anyone.

I'm tempted to delete his post but I'm going to leave it here as an example of how to earn a ban.

    @ohm-ed,

anytime after a fortnight from now you want to reflect on your posting style and the wisdom of insulting people on these forums, feel free to PM me asking for the ban to be lifted
