Jus wondering if theres any other young r old ppl who follow underage basketball anyware around the country?? Im mainly talking u18 here!

Also jus wanna make the point that there isnt enough money being pumped into underage basketball in Ireland! And the results of this are very clear from the finishings in this years u16, u18 and u20 european championships!

Anyone agree or got anytin to add??

Money and irish basketball dont go together, in any level irish basketball. There isnt a large enough fan base, poor advertising and zero coverage. You only have to look at the gyms around the country that ppl are asked to play in and you can see nobody really gives a ****. Basketball in ireland is simply a minority sport and the cost of building a gym, equiping a team and travel etc is just to much for most schools. Clubs fair no better unless they have a superleague team. Even then the money just isnt there. Coaches are all voluntary, and good coaches are a rare things. most get into it a school level cause they played at one point and have an idea. the standard of basketball isnt bad when you look at what its up against to succeed in ireland. some major chances need to be made to bring the level to be able to compete in europe thou and sadly this isnt going to happen anytime soon.....

as an ex national league player its no players fault for bball failing here. simple facilities and funds arent there.

The irony is that according to Basketball Ireland and I'm not sure how true this is but is Irelands' third largest sport in participation terms which means that despite everything that is wrong with this sport in this country there still seems to be a healthy base of players.

A large part of the problem for me is facilities. Quite often Gyms can be booked for normal Outdoor sports like Soccer which means the average Basketball player if they don't own an outdoor Basketball Hoop doesn't have any chance of working on his/ her game. Sure there are outdoor courts in Galway but they've seen better days.

In short lack of Media Coverage, not many qualified coaches and terrible Sports Council funding is exactly why Irish Basketball isn't at the stage it should be

Iv often wondered why rte dont start showing more superleague games apart from the cup! 4 or 5 games a year first and then see what happens!

I played with Ireland this past summer at the u16 european championships and jus by talking to some other countries the facilatys they have in comparisment to us are amazing!

The English teams national coach said that our team was talented enough to be challenging for a top 10 finish but we jus didnt hav enough preperation done. He said to us 'blame ur government for where ye finish' and we ended up coming 22nd!!
