CLUB AU CHRISTMAS PARTY IN ASSOCIATION WITH MILLER GENUINE DRAFT – SATURDAY DECEMBER 20

Club AU in association with Miller Genuine Draft is a three-roomed extravaganza featuring the best in Irish bands, artists and DJs. There has never been a better time for music in Ireland, and the two main strongholds of Belfast and Dublin both boast extremely healthy scenes. The goal of Club AU is to continue to build bridges across Ireland and to bring the best in music to new audiences. A combination of the hottest Irish bands, both north and south, will continue to take to the stage of The Attic. The Ball Room plays host to OMGWTFDISCO, with FAUX DJs manning the decks. The Bunker Club will continue to be the staple of Lavery’s, with Gregz McCann guaranteeing enough dancefloor action to fell an elephant. The times will be good.

    PANAMA KINGS
Of all the new NI bands that have turned heads this year, few can lay claim to having made a bigger crater both here and elsewhere than the Panama Kings. The Belfast-based four-piece look the part and talk the talk, but they also walk the walk, with an arsenal of spiky indie rock tunes that has captured the attention of fans and industry throughout the UK and Ireland. They’ve already put out two singles, the latest supported by a full UK tour, and had both of them voted into our Top 50 NI Songs of Our Lifetime poll. Not bad going, considering ‘Children’ was unreleased at the time. This is bound to be a triumphant and exceedingly messy homecoming show.

    ED ZEALOUS
Here’s a band whose perseverance is paying off. From beginnings as The Zoo, Ed Zealous have been building a fanbase and gigging relentlessly, and they can now look back on a fantastic 2008, having playing Glastonbury to excellent reviews, released acclaimed debut single ‘Pretty Face’ and headlined the Stiff Kitten’s Halloween spectacular. And there’s plenty more where ‘Pretty Face’ came from, tracks like ‘Mario’ and ‘For The Fishes’ displaying the infectious energy and knack for hooks that define the band, and with a raft of exciting new material in the works. Plus, they’ve all lived in a huge, infamously debauched house called the Icebox, where the ‘Mario’ video (available on their website) was filmed. Now that is cool.

    CUTAWAYS
Cutaways’ Start Stop, Start Stop EP is one of the finest Northern Irish releases of the year, four tracks of exuberant indie-pop from the Belfast band, now a trio after a couple of line-up changes earlier in 2008. Those changes facilitated a major change in sound and focus – they have long been known for scuzzy power pop in the style of Sugar or Weezer, but newcomer Grace McMacken has brought with her buzzing synths, an excitable stage presence and winning vocal interplay with frontman Paul McIver. The EP was launched with a packed-out show at the Empire, and we expect the same to kick off Club AU’s Christmas fandango. Surely a band to unite the masses.
