As a fellow American, Des reminds me a lot of the guys that I grew up with in the neighborhood, so I can relate to him. The fact that we both moved to Ireland at different times in our lives goes a long way with me as well.

I've met Des twice in the past two weeks, and I have to say he was a really cool guy both times that I met him. People either love him or hate him, as I have not seen any middle ground when people mention his name.

I don't think that there are many comedians that would go to the lengths that Des has over the past five/six years to develop, not only his act, but other along the way.

I would say that the Ireland is a more interesting place with Des as a part of it.

Without the use of a culchie accent for his punchlines, Des would be rendered silent.

quick question, was gonna post this on the forum here before but was sensing a lot of hostility to Des....

which of his DVD's has the "immersion" and the "freeeezing" girl in it...? I found that hilarious, struck a chord, gonna try pick one up before Christmas

Hey, I guess there's 2 ways to interpret the question 1) Des as a performer or 2) Des as a person.

    1) Performer Des in my opinion is very talented. He's got a good stage presence, and excellant delivery. His material is by in large quite strong, sometimes getting the audience to actually think about things (a dangerous concept I know) On the downside he can sometimes come across as a bit overbearing, shouting some of his set to get his point across. I've never gone to one of his gigs and not had a really good night.

    2) As a bloke he's a really sound, down to earth guy. In my opinion he has time for the "little people" of comedy, and is encouraging + supportive. He's done a lot of good work for charity + community as well as help raise awareness to certain "flaws" in the system such as the minimum wage vs cost of living and the terribly inept way schools teach Irish to kids.

So to answer the OP's question - YES he is a legend.

But thats part of his act. Without screaming for 90% of his routine tommy tiernan would be rendered silent.

    Accents > Screaming

In all fairness he uses his jackine accent as much as his culchie. It wouldn't be a show without Des mentioning the sterotypical 'northside Dublin scumbag'.

It's not part of his act, its his entire act.
I agree about Tommy Tiernan's screaming, that kind of creeped in, he didn't do it when he was starting out, go and see him now and my god, be prepared for screaming and shouting. I hadn't even really noticed till I watched a DVD with a Scottish girl who hadn't seen him before, she said something along the lines of "All he does is shout at you"

Des is an American.....who can do Irish accents!! Hilarious! He knows dublin people say "staary bud", and he knows about travellers!

I think the man deserves a certain amount of credit. He has shown over the last 5/6 years that he has shown serious versatility(this i think is the crux of what it takes to be a successful comedian).

No need to reply to that kind of stuff folks, tis off topic and will just lead to a flame-war. Just report the posts and the mods will deal with it.

Well enjoy seeing the exact same act again. I dare you to do a shot every time he delivers a punchline in a culchie accent.

I was at the show & he was not repetitive, he was very good & he is one of the few headliners that are willing to abandon their old material & use new rope.
He could quite easily become a tribute act to his old gold material but he seems to be heading in a different direction yet again, this show is based around more risque material & he does it well.

He is an extremely talented comedian in my opinion.

I only had to take 2 shots.

I saw him 4 times about 3 years apart (international comedy club, Electric Picnic), same stuff every time. If you like him thats fair enough though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,407 ✭✭✭Quint

Did he forget his act, or no one laughed at his jokes and he walked off stage? Heard an interview with him on the radio, basically something went badly wrong during one of his acts, probably about 3 years ago. Can anyone shed some light?

I've seen him three times in the past year and each show was different.

Whatever about people arguing as to whether he is funny or not, surely you must give him respect.
He's done three different series (Min wage, scumbags and Gaeilge) so as to learn more about society. He's done these things so he is able to produce new material, not just repeat the same lines over and over. He can perform in shows and make jokes based on actual life experience.

You may not find him funny, but I cannot see how you don't respect him some little bit for what he's done.

The little man was sound. He had a great stage presence. Obviously being 12 he was dealing with alot of jokes that he had heard/read somewhere else, but he held his own up there. Fair play to Des for giving the little man a shot at a stage like Vicar Street.

Michael Mee will have material up until the day he decides to change his name. lol

I like him. Sure, he over-uses some of his material, but in general he's quite good. I first saw him (like many people, I guess) on 'The Des Bishop Work Experience' which I loved. He seems like a sound bloke too, I really don't understand the hostility towards him, tbh.
