I've been lurking at these guitars for ages and i think it's coming to the time to upgrade from jagstang to one of those.

Problem is, i can't ****ing decide which one i want cos I absolutely love both their sounds.

Pros and cons for these guitars please? Hopefully that'll help me... I financially can't get both unfortunately!

as the owner of two jags i'd have to say jazzmaster

    simpler controls
    longer scale neckgive better sustain
much bigger sounding pickups (important for a three piece i think)

    Jazzmaster.

There's a reason why many great guitarists have chosen it, it sounds damn good!

Play a few of each and see if you find yourself preferring the feel of one or the other. Failing any obvious difference, and given that you like the sound of both generally, I say Jaguar... it has a cooler sounding name by a long shot. :pac:

Oh yeah, for pro's and con's and parts you'll need to upgrade. (Yes I said need)

First introduced at the 1958 NAMM show, the unique shaped Jazzmaster guitar should deliver Jazz-Sounds with the playing comfort of a Strat or Tele. In the ´90s Nirvana´s Curt Cobain helped to raise the popularity of this special guitar again.

I don't think Cobain was much of a Jazzmaster user...

    However, that guitar looks amazing!

    Tomorrow baby!!! Weeeeeeeee :D

As a matter of interest, how do you guys feel about selling your beloved guitars? I dont think I can ever sell the Jagstang, too attached to him. Alas I need the cash...

I know the feeling, Lauren. I have a Sheraton I never use anymore but I just love the damn thing too much to sell it.

I can't even bring myself to get rid of the Squire Strat which I'm not even that fond of. It sit's there on the rack with a puppy dog face on so I have to pick it up every now and then for a whirl!!

    Congrats!

Just to be aware about that one. If you need to replace anything make sure you check it's for a japanese Jazzmaster as the parts are different sizes and specs. The pickups are also more like strat singlecoils than Jazzmaster pickups. They're very narrow underneath those covers whereas proper JM pickups are wide and very flat. Curtis Novak makes AWESOME replacement pickups for Jazzmasters, even a P90 pickup that will fit in the existing cover!

On the subject of selling guitars, some I will and have sold but some stay. My Gibson Les Paul Jr. being one. That mofo ain't goin' anywhere!

is there much of a muchness between the classic player jazzmaster and the re-issue jazzmaster (similar in price)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,339 ✭✭✭me-skywalker

personally i think it comes down to what style of music you are playing more. i prefer the jag myself as can get that extra bite of it and the top end and bit if crunch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

feet for me would be planted in the Swervedriver camp (shoegaze!!)

I'm bidding on one at the mo, but the seller says "3 extra screw holes under the tremelo for some reason".....

    Notoriously badly built guitars...

My nephew has a jaguar, it rattles at the bridge, the intonation is off and it sounds a like a banjo...

Invest in something else, you'll thank yourself in years to come...

She already got a tasty looking Jazzmaster

Replace the bridge, problem solved. It's a requirement with jags. Maybe you should try spending 20$ on a new part, before you completely write off an entire model of guitar (which is loved by a *lot* of guitarists). But if you want, i can resurrect leo fender (who made a few guitars, "back in the day") and tell him you think his design sucks.

Aye, all you need to do is replace the bridge with a mustang bridge. :)

If you go into a shop and play a Jazzmaster, it'll have the awful 9-guage strings that every guitar leaves the factory with. But these were designed in the fifties for jazz, when everyone played with 12s or 13s. The bridge on Jags and JMs were designed for that relatively higher tension, that'll stop the buzzing.

The Japanese guitars have weaker vibrato systems and (already mentioned) cheapo pickups, loads of people get the CIJ guitar and then get an AVRI vibrato and different pickups. Novak was already mentioned, I think he's the man for the job, but I head Seymour Duncan make great JM pickups too, maybe for a little cheaper? But Novaks are custom-ordered, so they probably kick infinitely more ass?

    Badly built? FFS...

Anyone know of anywhere to get an AVRI trem and a Mustang bridge? I haven't found any sites that do 'em over here.

I've got a Strat and a Tele so I have no problem with Fender guitars - they are fine instruments and my preferred guitar manufacturer.

That said, my opinion (which I am entitled to) on jags/jazzmasters stands - everyone I've played sounds like a ukelele/sitar until the bridge is replaced. Poor build in my opinion.

I wouldn't buy a particular car if it was widely known that I had to replace the steering wheel or the doors straight after buying it because they are faulty !!!

Anyway, no need to take it so personally and go on a rant.

Good luck with resurrecting Leo by the way...

Apologies man, and leo is 70% intact now!!. The genesis device is working perfectly...

Fair enough if you dislike them, but bare in mind that most jags/jazzes have a completely different purpose to strats/teles/pauls/SGs etc. They're supposed to be played with heavy flatwound strings, and not for chugga chugga riffs.

And replacing the bridge aint that bad. Think about how many people buy guitars with a view to changing the p'ups, or modding the electrics. Sorry for the rant :).

No worries dude - each to their own...

sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I have a quick Q for jazzmaster owners. Where is the best place for getting pickguards? The one I bought has a white pearloid one, which, while lovely, I would prefer a black one.
It's not a major priority or panic, but I've seen pickguards online from between $20 and $50. Are some better than others...?

Also, the best site for getting the mustang bridges, or is ebay a-ok for em usually...
