    Hi all

I work as a java developer 3.5 years experience, I have well paying and very secure job at the min, but I'm not that happy in the roll, I'm thinking of going contracting. Would I be mad? Considering the economic climate at present.

    Regards

    B2

Yes I think you would be - if you are on a good salary then stay put for a while. You can in the meantime scope around for some extra small contracting work to see whats there.

Most companies are going to have to cut costs and contractors are a luxury in this type of scenario.

Use the next 12 months to save, learn new skills and perhaps in 2010 get ready to go out on your own if you still want to.

Depends on your situation. If you have a mortage/loans then yes it would be mad but if your debt free and hate your job then maybe you could take a risk.

    Thanks for the input.

I'm debt free and have cash in the bank, I don't hate my job, just think I could get something more challenging.

The job market is unhealthy at the moment and could be for another year, who knows? So I think it would make sense to stay in your current job.

I understand how you feel though - working somewhere you don't want to be can be soul destroying.

There is nothing to stop you looking around for a different permanent job?

I'm a recruiter, I have 4-5 Java contract roles however there are a good 25 candidates (that I know of) looking so it is very competitive out there. Also contracts are generally interview tomorrow and start next Monday but in a Perm role you will have to give the standard 2-4 weeks notice.

My advise is to stay put or move in to a permanent role. Contracting is too competitive at the minute to jump in to.
