I am planning on going to Japan for maybe 1-2 weeks after Christmas and i was wondering is the country a backpacker friendly place? In Tokyo is there any budget accommodation such as hostels etc? Is public transport and eating out cheap? I have always heard of Japan as being an expensive country.

    Hertz

Get a Japan Rail pass for traveling around the country, much cheaper than individual tickets, train travel in Japan is excellent

Loads of places to eat at reasonable prices, just shop around, keep away from tourist areas which will rob you.

It's expensive by Asian standards but cheaper than Ireland. The JR railpass is an absolute neccesity, it can't be bought in Japan - so be sure to get it sorted beforehand (trailfinders organise them). It's a great country. Be sure to stay in a capsule hotel some night and try to get to Miyajima and Koyasan. Schedule time in Kyoto, most Irish tourists prefer it to Tokyo. Spend a half day in Kobe at some stage and get yourself a Kobe beef (A1 grill is great for this)
