the other day a bird (small bluetit) appeared in our house. dont know how it got in as its feckin freezin and there was no way a window or door was open...

anyway my ma was terrified of it...not the bird itself but what it means.

Apparently a bird in the house predicts a death. now i just opened our door and the little bird flew out, but my ma really believes in this sort of thing...four days later and noone died...has anyone got any experiences with this sort of thing?im a bit of a skeptic myself but im intrigued....

Hmm I wouldn't worry about it, birds tend to come into houses in Winter to look for food, all it takes is one window left slighty open....

An old wives' tale does suggest that a death is imminent with the appearance of a bird in a house. Certainly my mother considers this to be so as a bird was in my grandmother's house the morning she died.

I had a robin in MY house last week who pooed everywhere and took ages to get out, particularly as I was in a hurry to get out myself.

Despite both my parents having terminal illnesses no deaths so far!!

Whats the time scale of the bird appearing = someone dying?

Yup, Id reckon anyone believing this tale would be able to associate it with 'a' death within certain time of it happening. Not so much that the poor old bird foretold it, more that whoever happens to coincidentally die within the next month would be 'the one'.

Superstitions, like voodoo, only tend to work if you believe they will.

    Superstitious nonsense really.

A bird flies into you house. You know what it means? A bird flew into your house.

I wouldn't give it too much thought.

hey, i believe the scariest thing about a bird flying into the house was that it could poo on the carpet. my ma was a biy worried cos she believes in this stuff, i dont.

but by asking if i should be scared, i was trying to start a discussion on these "premonitions" actually coming true...just out of interest!

Like someone above said, what's the time limit for someone to die? Within two years of the bird flying in? 5 years?

I can remember twice having a bird fly into my house. Nobody died for well over a year after.

Ah what a myth! How could it be possible that a bird in the house means a death. Have no time for that whatsoever.

I think it is something like:
    t=Y²(X*3.14159265)

Where t = time to death, Y=type of bird & X=type of house (detached, semi etc)

How do you square a bird:confused:

A lot of the older folkies believe this bird = omen of death thing. Allegedly in my home parish a bird flew in to the church during mass and landed on a young woman's head. She died in a car crash later that day. So everybody there now believes the bird thing.
I think if you took the amount of times that a bird flew into a house and no-one died versus the amount of times someone did die the results would be somewhat skewed.

It is tough to believe you can, but not as tough as believing a bird can be portent of death.
