    These are all Korean movies.

First of all, a kind of old one (1999) .Shiri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiri_(film)

    Shiri_Poster.jpg

Absolutely excellent spy thriller involving North and South Korea. And yes the guy on the right is 'Oldboy' :)

The next one is from 2008. The Guard Post. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guard_Post

Really (Really) violent horror/thriller army flick. Basically there are guard posts all over the border between North and South Korea and something really nasty starts happening to the army boys. I really loved this, although many people thought it was a bit slow I thought it was spot on.

    Guard_Post_506_poster.jpg

Next one is from 2007 and normally I don't go for these type of movies but this was simply fantastic. Its a thriller. Seven Days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Days_(film))

Do yourself a favour and just watch it, don't read the storyline at all. p.s > Its that korean bird from Lost thats the main character.

    Seven_Days_(film).jpg

I assume everyone here has already seen Oldboy ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldboy

    Oldboykoreanposter.jpg

Without a doubt one of the greatest movies ever.

Great Idea for thread my suggestions aren't quite as obsure but some people maynot have seen them

District 13 (Great mindless film be sure to get the subtitled version to avoid the OIrish accents)

Boondock Saints (I've mentioned this a few times totally OTT/funny film that pokes fun at itself and films like it)

Football Factory (Doing the rounds on film 4 at the moment even if you hate Danny Dyer as most do its prob the best of the football hooligan films)

Nice on OP, gonna check those out (seen Old Boy already, genius film!)

Would you believe I have had old boy at home for months and haven't watched it! Well that's tonight sorted! As for a recommendation, Dogma, yes I know a lot of people hate Kevin Smith but this is a brilliant piss take of Catholocism (sp) and has a lot of very good one liners!

    Whatever happened to Harold Smith?

Terrific movie. Not available on DVD as the movie industry thought no one would buy it.

GNFOS is a legitimate film and I'm very disappointed all mention was removed from here :(

I was thinking there were a few posts missing, of all the bare assed cheek.

as to the topic, there's a movie called 'joint security area' directed by Chan-wook Park. i'll post a little synopsis here, as I'm not the best at descriptions.
Joint Security Area (2000) is a South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook. Its plot revolves around efforts to unravel the truth behind an illegal shooting at the politically and militarily sensitive North-South Korean border

    --edit found this on wiki
Within two weeks of its release the film had taken in one million admissions.[citation needed] A DVD of the movie was presented to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-II by South Korea's President Roh Moo-Hyun during the Korean summit in October 2007.[2]

    lol. how touching.

it really is alot better than that description makes it sound, ****ing amazing film. I was left very happy with the time spent watching it. Unless shakira was naked and bouncing on me, i'd struggle to think of a better way of spending a couple of hours.

Fantastic movie!! Willem Defoe is truly awesome!

I haven't seen this film, but have seen the fine documentary on the Writer/Director. A cocky son of a bitch who got way above himself.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390336/
A documentary on the rise and stumble of Troy Duffy, the bartender-cum-filmmaker who was swept up by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein to turn his script for The Boondock Saints into a feature film.

    The 9th Configuration

I have to agree with all that was stated previous.

One from the bottom shelf you might consider. This si more of a decent movie you don't know about,

    Bubba ho-tep.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281686/
Bruce Campbell as Elvis excellent. The ending disappoints but its worth a watch for the first 40 minutes.

    Another is
    Beyond the mat
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218043/
This is a documentary about the WWF (wrestling). If you weren't a fan as a kid you may not like this one, but it is a cracking documentary about what goes on behind the scenes in the wwf.

I have a few more i just can't think of them right now.

Bit of a cult one but The Wicker Man with Christopher Lee is a great film.

Haven't seen the entirety of the remake but what I have seen is terrible.

    Dont think it was mentioned

A film called Midnight Sting (aka Diggstown). Great movie from the early 90s

James woods, Louis Gosset Jnr, Oliver Platt and a young Heather Graham.
    Really good boxing/con movie.

Just bought this movie on play for 4.50. Was worried it wouldnt be as good as i remembered it. Still stands up in my opinion

+1 on Boondock Saints , Old Boy, Sunset Boulevard, 12 angry men (original, Withnail and I and Jacobs Ladder. Some other suggestions are The Butterfly and the Diving Bell, Map of the Human Heart, Cook, the thief, his wife and her lover or any Peter Greenway film, Gyppo and Betty Blue. Really like Sweet Sixteen too and Heaven and loads more besides.Great idea for a thread btw, could do with a load of new rental ideas.

Was that the one about the Hitman Heart? Not a WWF fan but facinating documentary none the less!

That was Wrestling With Shadows ... which was interesting at least.

Beyond The Mat is probably the better of the two. It takes a look at several wrestlers who at various stages in their career. People like Mick Foley (Mankind) who was WWF Champion around the time, and Jake The Snake Roberts who was on the road working independents.

I'd recommend Beyond The Mat to anyone (especially if they had even a fleeting interest in pro wrestling).

I know the thing to do is recommend a foreign language film, but I've become generally suspicous of them. People seem to be much less critical of their flaws when they got to the effort of reading a few subtitles.

Anyway ... I'd recommend an English film: The Last Hangman about Albert Pierrepoint.
If only for the great performance Timothy Spall puts in.

I've seen that, and it's good. But the copy I picked up was called Pierrepoint. And I got it in Chartbusters.

Very good though. I do like Timothy Spall.

New to the film forum so not sure what counts as ones that people on here wouldn't know about but Dead Man's Shoes (great performances by two leads), Elephant (very slow-burner) and A Tale of Two Sisters (haven't seen it in ages, so gonna do soon, but remember it as the best Jap horror I saw at the time) are my recommendations.

    Great thread btw. :D

El Mariache is a pure masterpiece, Robert Rodriguez debut

In the spirit of the opening post Brotherhood is a more than decent South Korean flick about two brothers and their expieirances during the Korean war.

I'd also recommend Ghost in the Shell. And Blood the last Vampire as two top anime picks. And if you get a chance Infernal Affairs the film The Departed is based on is a must!

'Kids' is a fantastic film from 1995 - not sure if it's well known?
Also, 'The Secret Life of Words', which I saw at the Jameson Film Festival in 2007 but haven't seen around since.
'Noi Albinoi' - sublime Icelandic film

'State of Grace' is well worth a watch. It stars Sean Penn, Ed Harris and Gary Oldman. Probably quite well-known but worth a mention anyway.

Quote function not working for some reason. Delighted to finally know the name of that film Candy, happened upon it one time and it blew me away! I actually balled my eyes out at the end and ended up missing the titles as a result. The inimitable Geoffrey Rush is in it too and fantastic as always. I really rate Heath Ledger as an actor based primarily on having seen this film and Abi Cornish is really good too, though I've only seen her in Somersault besides. Also one to watch.

    I both agree and disagree.

I agree in the sense that people will overlook flaws of films they love, it's as evident in genre films as well, if we take The Evil Dead for example it's extremely rough around the edges and as much as I like Bruce Campbell, he's no Daniel Day Lewis. But fans of the film will latch onto it, and can look past those rough edges, enjoy Bruce's hokey acting for what it is, and view it as a thoroughly great film. So yeah, I'll watch Zatoichi and forgive the dodgy CGI, because I absolutely love it. Nothing wrong with overlooking some flaws if the overall thing is something you're happy it.

But I don't really agree with the sentiment of your post, it seems to me that you're suggesting people will rate a foreign higher, simply because it's foreign. To that I can't disagree harder without popping a blood vessel, there's almost no end of examples of foreign language that are (without taking taste into account) flawless. I can't think of any thillers in the last few years that were better than Tell No One, or drama that was better The Lives of Others.
