I've been made redundant and one option open to me is to register as a sole trader and hope some work comes my way. I'm getting jobseeker's benefit at the moment which, little as it is, is at least regular income. I'm afraid if i set up a business I would I'd lose the jb regardless of whether i got work in or not. Anyone have any advice on this? thanks

It's free and I got mine at my local dole office. It's FANTASTIC. It's a handbook exploring options for unemployed people. It's published by the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed : www.inou.ie

SPECIFICALLY it details information about the "Back to Work Enterprise Allowance". Under this scheme, qualified persons can take up approved self-employment and keep their Social Welfare payment at the following rates:
    • 100% for the first year
    • 75% for the second year
    • 50% for the third year
    • 25% in the fourth year
    But here's the bummer...
Jokseeker's will qualify if they have had an entitlement to Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit for two years. So in your particular circumstances it may be of little help.

However, I strongly recommend investigating this handbook.

    Good luck :)
