Im new to all this talk about shortwave radios etc.

However, I'm thinking of getting one of them(heading to africa soon for a few months) as I'm told that they are handy to listen to local stations back home.

Can someone please give me a crash course in the area of shortwave listening ?
It would be very helpful when trying to decide on a radio...speaking of which, can someone recommend one which will be portable and not take up too much space for my travels?

any help will be greatly appreciated!

Ireland doesn't have much Short Wave, occasional RTE1 relayed on other transmitters.
BBC WS is greatly cut back.

Many of the traditional SW broadcasters now use Satellite, Internet and VHF-FM relays.

Maybe A Worldspace portable Satellite Radio with Shortwave and AM/FM, pickup a secondhand Hitachi KH-WS1 on Ebay (discontinued, but has AM/FM and SW as well as portable Satellite) . Worldspace is mostly subscription.

For pocket portable and 2x AA cells a Yaesu VR500. All analogue modes and bands. about €300

Or a basic MW/SW/VHF radio from Lidl about €28. Some stores still have a few.

    Or Eton All band Portable.
