A tragic accident it would seem, not much info yet as it is just breaking news:
Four police officers have been killed in an early morning road accident in County Down.
Four policemen have been killed in a road accident in County Down.

It is understood they were on their way to help a colleague when the accident happened on the road between Warrenpoint and Kilkeel at around 0400.

The two full-time and two part-time officers were from the Mourne area. It is understood some had young children.

A police spokesman said there was "no indication that the deaths were terrorist related. Police are treating the deaths as a tragic accident."

Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde visited the scene of the tragedy.

He said he was "shocked" at what he had seen, and at the loss suffered by both the families of the men and the PSNI.

Mayor of Newry and Mourne, Colman Burns, said the news "had caused great shock and despair throughout the community".

DUP assembly member Jim Wells said: "It is my prayer that the peace of God will be with each family as they face this difficult time."

The Moygannon Road is expected to remain closed for several hours.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers were on duty at the time of the accident on the Moygannon Road, the main route linking Warrenpoint and Kilkeel, Co Down.

The four male officers were in a 4x4 police vehicle which is understood to have left the road in the crash which happened shortly before 4am.

There is no evidence of a terrorist link to the tragedy at this stage.

Police have sealed-off the scene of the crash which occurred on a road that runs along the shoreline of south County Down.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

The Ulster Unionist Party's Basil McCrea said he was shocked to hear of the tragedy and he extended his condolences to the deceased officers' families, friends and colleagues.

"This is a dreadful tragedy," he said. "And it is a stark reminder of the debt we owe the PSNI for the work they do for the community.

"The Ulster Unionist Party passes on its sincere condolences today."

That's awful. I wonder if it was a Tangi they were in. I wouldn't expect the passenger protection in those to be up to much.

    RIP

The dangers we face became a reality last night as 4 of our colleagues were killed in Warrenpoint last night in what appears to be a tragic accident.

My sincere condolences to the families, friends and all in the PSNI family.

Its no consolation but it just shows how much comradery there is within Police Forces to help out a colleague when they are in danger.

I heard it was one of the Mitsubishi jeeps, not sure if thats a Tangi Terrontress. The Police also said they are going to examine the vehicles black box.

As if the crash wasnt bad enough, seemingly their vehicle caught fire as well. They were aged in their 20's and 30's. Its so sad.

A horrific tragedy, and just shows the dangers our emergency services face anytime they respond to a call. May they rest in peace, and may god give their families and colleagues the strength to get over this awful tragedy.

I've printed off your comments and passed them to my friend in PSNI who will pass them to E District where the four officers were stationed.
