I was on a training programme about two years ago the ASIST Programme, I had to go as I was short on training hours which are required for memberships of professional bodies I belong to. This course was been run by the HSE for different professions, there were a few cops from different stations on it. But tbh the training was sh!te I really hope they get better training than that.

Prevention training is done in the Garda college now and I have been on 2 cpd (internal) training courses where suicide was part of it.

Most in fairness is common sense and compassion. Dont know about the rest of you but I have come across of fair few people, mostly cries for help and Im lucky enough to work near the Samaritans.

For anyone that doesnt know, you can call direct to their offices on Marlborough Street, Dublin 1 where they have a call in office until 9pm. They are also only too happy to chat with police about their service.

And for calls like this your perfectly safe carrying a person in the patrol car without arresting.
