Hi,

Does anyone know somewhere cheap to get my Canpon 350D digital SLR repaired. One of the prongs that go into the memory card is bent. Apprently this requires repalcement of a major electronic component and would cost €150. It must be cheaper to buy a new body for the camera!!!

God save us from the bin and replace 'engineers'.
Before that last resort I'd look for someone with the right tool to bend the pin back, it may snap due to metal fatigue but it's worth a try. For example any Telecom Eireann exchange technician who's worked on crossbar or strowger could do it for a pint.

If you can't find anyone and are near South Dublin I have a friend who could try to fix it if you want, send me a pm to organise if you're interested.

He makes precision engineered tools for a living but is also a film Leica enthusiast who has repaired and refurbished old cameras - the type with lots of super delicate mechanical parts including springs that have to be tensioned within fine tolerances, he knows his stuff.

I'd have a go for free myself but only if it looks like I can access the pin with the right fine pliers without having to open the camera, because I'm not trained to service them.

Make sure to earth yourself first by touching a copper central heating pipe (which is in turn earthed by law), a static discharge can fry some electronics. Good luck.

Something similiar happened to me recently

It wont cost under €200 to get repaired professionally + warranty for work done. Probably considering its age I reckon its fair to assume more will go wrong in future?

I suggest buying a new body from ebay

With all due respect I wouldn't take a pin being bent by card insertion as a sign that "the rest of it probably isn't far behind" as the rogue trader saying goes.
That camera could work fine for another 20 years once the pin is back in position. Besides he's already been quoted 150 for the job, so how can you assert that it'll cost him at least 200?

this happened to my girlfriends 400d there a few weeks ago and I was able to fix it with a small screwdriver. could have broken easily, but I figured it would have cost the same to get fixed professionally whether I fully broke a pin off or not. anyway, i got lucky, was easy enough to coax the pin back to the right position - works fully now

Hi there - just wondering is your friend still doing repairs? Does he have a website or shop?

Have same problem with prongs in a cannon 400D - and no idea where to get it fixed.
