    hi,

i currently have a handset supplied by 3 ireland and am able to go into the my 3 menu and from there watch 3's mobile live tv service, use msn messenger and use skype all free ( apart from the mobile tv)

question is if i throw my simcard into an unlocked iphone 3g, can i still use 3's mobile tv service? and what about skype and msn?

    thanks

For Skype and MSN you will need Fring. For MSN only you will need PalRingo (both free). Voip over 3G is not allowed but is possible by wi-fi. Others have commented that this is poor. PalRingo offers PTT (push to talk).

If the TV service is watched by you on the web or if it is a webapp, then chance are yes. If not, but in a dedicated application, then no.

If it is via the web,or via My3/Planet 3 let me know the URL now and I will test it for you.

I have made voip calls for fring, google talk and msn through fring on 3 IRL.

Not on the iPhone you haven't, which is what we are discussing.

Do you mean planet3/services/mobile TV and then stuff such as Sky New, Sky Sports, Geek TV, Ireland a.m etc, all chargeable?

Well, they all showed up, I didn't buy anything. Is there any that are free to test?

When I watch France24 or the BBC iPlayer in Safari, they work perfectly.

na i dont think so..cherrs anyway im guessing they will work..

but does your iphone have a planet 3 shortcut on it, just like a phone from 3 would? or do you have to do some fancy stuff to get to it?

also is it possible for some1 in dublin to use bbc iplayer, or is that only if you like in the uk or up north:D

I just have this in my bookmarks: http://mobile.three.co.uk/837_sc

Gets me to Planet3/my3 pretty quickly. It's easy to establish a 3 IRL equivalent.

You cannot use the BBC iPlayer in Ireland but you may be able to access it via a proxy (same goes for tvcatchup.com).

i rang 3 ireland customer care to get a bit of help with this...

when i told them i was buying an italian iphone 3g without a sim lock and was planning to put my 3 sim in it i was told straight out ''your 3 sim will not work in an iphone, regardless of it being network locked or not'' and then went on to try sell me an lg renoir...

told him he was wrong , that my mate had one with a 3 sim and it worked fine, he told me ''yeah thats probably because he bought the iphone direct from a 3 store and thats what i should do'' - who the hell trains these guys and how do they get away with giving out false info like this?

he then went on to say a 3 sim will not work in any non 3 phone..i asked him why did 3 sell simcard only packs then, and he said they were 3pay and that 3pay sims may work in a non 3 handset, but not pay monthly sims''....

Why did you tell them this? Anyway, it's complete arsé, all my 3 SIMs work in it (IRL, UK, HK) without so much as a hiccup.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 230 ✭✭bmcgrath

You called 3 customer care? CRAZY! There customer care sucks!
3G iphone can take 3 simcards.
It's only the first generation iPhone that can't take it as 3 block no 3G phones apparently. At least that's what happened when I tried it...

just out of interest..are your sims pay as you go? they claimed that these would work, but not biull pay sims..

i told them simply because they asked me..i asked them how to go about getting planet 3 functional on my new phone which would not be a 3 phone..i was wondering if i could possible get it flashed with the 3 software..then they asked me what phone i was buying etc...

But sure I have told you already that it works.....it's something like mobile.3ireland.ie/hutchkey. It's just not formatted that well for iPhone use....but it works.

My SIMs are all bill pay and they (3) are full of bull. You can use ANY 3 SIM in it (though a seller on eBay claimes 3 ITA SIMs will NOT work -which may well be true) and it doesn't matter if they are voice SIMs, data-only SIMS, X-Series SIMs or whatever. I use mine every single day without a bother and without incurring any additional charges for surfing, streaming audio, video etc. I don't even have to either input or switch APNs when changing from 1 3 SIM to another.

You cannot possibly get your iPhone flashed with 3 software -and why would you want to, having travelled all the way to Italy for an unlocked one, even if such a thing were possible?

Getting to Planet3 is child's play: the UK address I gave you earlier will get you there and so will this one (very useful):

    http://mobile.3ireland.ie/837_sc/postPayFreeUnits.do

Just navigate from there to My3 or Services -that's all I did last night to have a look at your MobileTV. Simple.

Now for goodness' sake, if you're getting the iPhone in Italy -get it -but KEEP SCHTUM, where 3 are concerned. they're weird.

culabula, cojomo 2, i was just wondering if u could answer a few q's and any1 else who can help.

U seem keen to stick to ur 3 sim cards. What would 3 have that is superior to lets say vodafone. i have heard that coverage is poor and it is awkward to find a shop to top up in. i would be on pay as you go btw.

I am also looking into getting an italian iphone. but i would put my vodafone pay as u go sim into it as vodafone have a 99c per day 3g data usage plan, with a limit of 50mb or something like this. u told me earlier culabula that iphone come with a 1gb plan from O2, is this just billpay or both. i dont think O2 would be an option for me anyway. I would consider meteor as most of my friends are on it and with free txts etc. but i dont know anything about there 3g roaming price plans.

How did u get ur iphone culabula? turbo sims reduce some of the iphones features i.e. coverage, yes? is there any other option to buying an italian iphone?

i might take u up on ur offer of buying me an italian iphone as on adverts, presuming u havent left yet. maybe only €50-60 markup instead?

    thanks in advance!!!

called into 3 on the way home from work just to check with one of the guys instore about using my 3 sim in a non 3 phone (iphone 3g)...culabula i know you said it works and ofcourse i believe u..just wanted to hear it from them incase things go wrong i can go back and quote them on it..

i thought the guys in store would know more that those guys in india..but unless what they told me is true (i hope not)...

the guy said he was on a training course last week and that this very issue was covered..he said that the 3 sim will work in non 3 phones as long as they are unlocked and 3g..however he said only for calls and texts..he said that if you surf the net, you will be charged their standard out of bundle per mb rates..i told im that id have a 1gb add on..he said that this doesnt matter..that ALL data that goes through non 3 phones would be charged at out of bundle rates and that data add on would not work... i assume this is just more bull from 3 but just wanted to make sure...

for me , 3 is superior to vodafone as they are cheaper(on 3, 29 euro a month give me 150 flexi units and 150 3 to 3 calls, voda only give 100 min + 100 txt, for data, 10 euro gets me 1gb with 3, and only half that with voda)
not sure about pay as you go rates for either..but 99c a day for 50mb data is a rip off!!

ragarding turbo sims, i hear they dont work with the most recent update..anyway they sound like a pain in the ass..

im goin to italy on thur week..im only getting 1 extra iphone and i already have a taker..havnt heard from him in a couple a days tho so ill just double check with him..and 100 mark up it remains(sorry)!

I imagine they said that because non-3 phones wouldn't have the right APN settings for accessing the internet. Surely if you have the correct settings, it should work the same as a 3 phone? I don't see how they'd distinguish between the two. I'm open to being corrected on this however.

yeah he was saying that they dont know the settings! i would have thought the settings would be on my sim card and that when put into a new phone they would automatically sort themselves out no?

    hey,

if i put a 3 sim card in a non 3 phone (but still a 3g phone)..assuming the phone does not automatically change the APN setting for internet access..does any1 here know what they are and how to enter them? And once this is done can the phone be used for internet access?

    also..what does APN stand for??

    thanks

In my experience, there is no need to enter then on the iPhone. It just works.

The APN for 3 IRL is 3ireland.ie.

This comes to you from my iPhone in Paris using a Bouygues Telecom SIM. I took my 3 out and put it in. I changed no APN settings whatsoever.

3 offers virtually unlimited data for a pittance: X-series, Internet Max, dataSIM from datmodem (10GB).

It roams in certain territories FOC.

As I am someone who travels frequently from Belfast in the occupied territories to Dublin, this is the one for me and in practice, its shortcomings in 2008 are few and far between (and I also have several Speakeasys for use in the ROI @99c a day, if necessary).

I also travel to Italy and so it is quite simply, a no-brainer.

Any other Irish SIM costs a fortune to run abroad. Even within the 26 counties, I would choose a 3 SIM plus a speakeasy for occasional use.

I'm currently with 3 and I can say plain and simple the 3 customer line and shop staff are talkin bull to you. I've used 3 sim free phones over the last couple years and have never had a problem once I got all the correct settings. Planet 3 did cause an issue for me at one stage but just went back to normal just as quick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,801 ✭✭✭Ah-Watch

I'm going to get the bundle from 3(broadband and 3pay phone) broadband can be a back up service and I want a 3 phone for handiness sake too but I'd stick to my guns with Vodafone-3's customer service is deplorable! AS far as I'm aware as long as you pop in your sim into an iphone the settings automatically come on-they did on my samsung Tocco anyway which was an 02 phone with a vodafone sim and I understand it works under the same principal with 3

agreeing with everyone above that is total rubbish. As long as you have the data bundle and the phone connects to the internet you will not be charged the out me bundle rate.

Your 3 sim card will work in your unlock iphone, but you will not be able to access planet 3 as it is a feature of the phone and the iphone is not a reg 3 handset

Go to http://mobile.3ireland.ie/hb/hutchkey and save it as a bookmark

if u stick ur 3 sim in a non 3 phone(but 3g) i think the only features you will not have would be the likes of the free skype and msn apps the most 3 phones have built in to them...

but then again if u navigate to my three, go to services etc then maybe you can dowload skype? when i bought my last 3 phone it didnt come with skype pre installed, i had to go to planet 3 and download it onto the phone..this may also work with a non 3 branded phone as long as the handset supports the app..if any1 knows if it does , let us know!

You can't download the Skype app as it was written for Symbian and SE phones -not OSX iPhone.

No you can't. The only app available for using Skype on the iPhone is *Fring* which allows IM from a number of popular services such as gTalk and Skype. Voip is permissible from Skype over wifi but not over 3G. It was a condition of Fring's acceptance into the app store that VoiP be crippled over 3G.

That's pretty crap if you can't use any VOIP service on an Iphone

As I've said, it's permissible over wi-fi. There have never been any claims for the iPhone that VoiP was permissible or allowed.

Many of these facilities we take for granted are denied by other networks in countries as close as the UK and France on all modern phones.

On the other hand, there are many sublime things that iPhone does do which other handsets can only as yet, dream of.

Doesn't matter anyway, went and bought a Renoir from 3 today anyway. Returned my nokia N96 because of freezes. Only got it a week ago. Wouldn't recommend. Hope I;m happy with the LG.
