Fly to america, walk into an Abercrombie store, buy Abercrombie, then fly home.....

    Simple really? :P

London is nearest but most expensive. Just order online and pay up the taxes when they arrive. Everything in the shops here is dodgy and out of date.

Your not safe yet! I remember reading on here a while back about fellow boardsies who received letters a month or so after from the shipping company asking them to pay up the vat. Maybe you will get lucky though.

For me, well my dad was in america recently so he brought back a bit, but what i usually do is get my uncle (who lives in the states obviously) to buy the stuff i want and he ships it over to us then. I think there is a website that offers a similar service??? Cant think of the name off hand......

EDIT: http://mycousininamerica.com/ i haven't used it but it seems like a good idea. Anyone used it?? I think i found out about it here.

Hey tabatha, don't assume that you won't have to pay customs. Abercrombie use Fedex and Fedex always charge customs (well most of the time anyway). It sometimes takes a few weeks for them to send out an invoice.

ive bought from abercrombie.com a few times.. really quick delivery. But customs are really cracking down on the vat. If Fed Ex dont bill u upon delivery you will get it in the post up to 6wks later..

something to look forward to in the new year :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

you are not charged if your Item comes from England or anywhere in the E.U. for that fact. There's a small exception that you are technically meant to get charged customs if your item originates from Jersey but more often than not they are lumped in with England.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,078 ✭✭✭tabatha

well at least thats something. only abercrombie and benifit to look forward too

Nope, it's actually gone up now - it can be up to 40% of the total order value (incl shipping).

    tinkerbell wrote: »

    Where you get that from?

Mine is 21.5% VAT + 3% customs charge + fedex admin fee of 10 euro approximately.

Now unless VAT in Ireland has jumped 15% or custom charges have gone up by the same then I very much doubt your figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

^^ Because I ordered Abercrombie a while back and this was the breakdown of the Fedex custom charges:
Duty => Total order value in € (incl shipping) x 12%
    Admin charge => 10
    VAT => ( Total order value + Duty + Admin charge ) x 21%

All in all it came to about 39% of the order value. I queried it with Fedex because it was really high and they said that no it's normally that high. Did they overcharge me!?!

    EDIT: Here's what's on the Revenue's webpage:
    Leaflets & Guides
    PN 1882
Public Notice 1882 - Ordering Goods over the Internet or from Mail Order Catalogues
    1. General
This Notice is a brief guide for persons who are considering buying goods either over the Internet or from mail order catalogues.

    3. Basis on which Duty is Calculated
    Customs Duty:

The value of the goods for the purposes of charging customs duty is calculated on the price paid or payable for the goods plus the cost of transport (including postage), insurance and any loading or handling charges associated with the delivery of the goods into the EC. The rate of customs duty applicable can vary and depends on the nature of the goods being imported. Further information on rates of duty can be obtained by accessing Taric.

    Value-Added Tax:

Imported goods are liable to VAT at the same rate as applies to the sale within the State of similar goods. The value of the goods for the purpose of VAT is their value for customs purposes, described above, increased by the amount of any duty or other tax (but not including VAT) payable and any other transport, handling or insurance costs between entry into the EC and delivery to their final destination.

Don't know why people go to the expense of buying it. My only Abercrombie item (hoodie) came from a clothes shop in my town for 15e still with the US price tags on it at $69. Will go back there at the next sale and seek out more for the winter.

Customs really is a joke though, can't believe they take so much!!

dont know how you were charged that amount. i got my fedex bill and it was broken down like this....
    10 euro for adminstration charges
    18 euro vat

that was all i had to pay. i bought just over 200 euro of clothes on abercrombie for it. vat was 21% not 39 or 40% like some people are claiming.

It wasn't claimed that VAT is 39% or 40%.

Fact of the matter is tinkerbells explanation of the the VAT and Duty charges is spot on. If your in any doubt then contact Revenue who will confirm.

You or others may have been charged other amounts but this doesn't invalidated the correct method of charges.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,078 ✭✭✭tabatha

i must have been lucky and not have to had paid the 12% as this is not on my statement. just had to pay the 21% and 10 euro for admin charges.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

^^^ Yep I think you just were lucky in not getting charged the full whack. Just be aware of next time you're ordering, you could get hit for the full amount so probably a good idea to factor in the cost of duties when ordering!

And you know the way you are allowed €22 without charges or €45 for a gift do they take this amount off when calculating your charges?

E.G Total order came to €200, will they calculate your charges on €178?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

no they don't take that value off.

gifts can still be liable to be caught if over $45 mark. also getting the company to mark stuff down as a gift is extremely hard thing to get them to do and most if not all reptuable companies will not do it.

Can anyone tell me the point of Albercrombie ? I walked around Dundrum shopping centre and it was like the place was full of clones. Seriously, all girls looked alike wearing the same A&F clothing and the lads were as bad, one couple even had matching hoodies only in different colours.
Why do people all want to look like each other ? Add this to another thing America has alot to answer for.

The question is why do ppl think its a "premium" brand? It's like a US River Island, with the quality and prices (in dollars) to match. And every other label has moved past the "distressed" t-shirt and hoody look, so what's the point? Can't believe people go to such effort, or attempt to broaden their look with identical labels like Hollister (same company even!) and American Eagle (ooh different elk logo). Just get a bloody fashion sense and open your mind to a few more labels than paying over the odds for such tat

A fedex courier will never ever take money for taxes off you upon delievery. You will be sent out a bill a week or two after you have received your package. Its very popular we deliever thousands of Abercrombie and Hollister packages in dublin every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭johnk123

Just order it and pay the taxes. Unless you get a relative to send it to you as a "gift" then i think all bets of avoiding the fees are off.

Why do you care? Nobody is making YOU wear the clothes. I for one buy it for my family as I find the quality of it to be of a higher standard than other brands available in Ireland i.e it doesn't shrink after a couple of washes.

You see people walking around wearing the same clothes from
Dunnes, Pennys and clothes shops like these. Do you have a problem with these people too?

I don't buy Abercrombie because I think its a premium brand, I buy it because in my opinion it is better quality than other clothes which would cost you the same, if not more, in Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

I buy Abercrombie because it is better quality than the normal stuff you get over here from the likes of River Island etc. I for one love A&F jeans - they are defo my favourite everyday wear jeans. They fit like a dream and they are good quality. A&F's tank tops are amazing too - they are sooo soooo long unlike a lot of brands you buy over here and their tank tops barely cover you up. And the hoodies are just so comfy and you can just snuggle up and be lovely and warm in them.

I'm not gonna be some slave to fashion and just buy what is hot right now just so I'm in fashion - I wear whatever I like and that includes A&F coz it's just so comfy. So I'm not bothered that some people think wearing A&F is silly - if those people think it's silly then just don't buy A&F, simple as!

that person at the start of this thread who said "go to america...." gave ya the best answer. it costs a fortune in costs for the transport and the customs...often having to pay 50% more the euro value. the best way to do it is to know someone in the US who can buy the stuff for ya (or you send it to their adress) and get them to post it on. carriage is about half the price and ya dont get done for taxes and charges! which take the good out of it. The london shop will roast ya so no entertaining that!

Has anyone tried the website the www.mycousininamerica.com?? It says they are for site that dont ship outside the US, but i they list A&F as one of their top hits.... anyone have any experience using it??

I doubt if it is genuine. A+F do not wholesale to any retailer and the only means of getting A+F is through the web or in their shops.

It is stated on their website

Well used to work in the store myself for awhile and can certainly testify that what they sell are indeed the real deal from what I could see. Knew the owner of the stores and there is no way he would sell anything but geniune items, as many irish 'celebrities' have bought from the stores and would seriously harm the stores reputation if they were found to be fake.

I got some stuff there last year. The store is actually incredible. Its like a night club. Best looking staff I have ever seen in one shop so your in for a treat!

Its pretty expensive though, i'll say that much. Very good selection of stuff. I guarantee you'll drop several hundred quid in there, if you are into A&F at all.

IIRC, I got a shirt for 75 (sterling), 2 t-shirts 40 quid each. Start saving cos I was gutted I didn't bring more with me.

Well, I just drive about 10 minutes to the local Mall and head into the A&F store. They have a Hollister shop right next to it, which I prefer.

To tell you the truth, people in America aren't wearing it as much as before, it is slowly fading and Hollister is a bit more popular. Hollister is actually a small coastal town in California which was/is known for it's relaxed, surfer atmosphere and thus the clothing line reflects it.

One of the bigger things here now is Puma.

I also wanted to mention that it is fairly screwed that you have to pay so much to import the stuff. Does anyone know if it costs as much for a person to ship themself? I'd ship someone stuff it was cheaper for them.

Oh and a plus for going on the store is the quality of the women they have working in there, it's amazing. HOT.
