Hi guys looking for some advice on my training - I go to Figure 8 3 times a week and also do a spinning and yoga class, I've cut out potatoes and bread and use wholewheat pasta and brown rice. The problem is I'm not loosing any weight if anything my belly seems to be getting bigger, more bloated/swollen

Is there any other exercise I can do to help work my tummy - I know you can' just aim exercise at one particular area but it's really getting to me.

If I stand in front of the mirror and let it all hang out I look pregnant, that's the shape my belly is taking.

    I'm about 5ft 6" and weigh about 11 stone.

    Any ideas would be great

    thanks

Cut out the pasta, whole wheat is still pasta and its the wheat that is probably bloating you, you might aswell eat bread if you eat that.

sounds like you need to cut down on your calories too, as your belly is getting bigger, and try new exercises too..

Post your Diet and times you eat...

That will help us understand whats going on

Breakfast small bowl of Cherios with low fat milk

    11am fruit scone and tea

1pm wholewheat cracker bread with banana, or spreadable cheese or homemade veg soup. Low fat yogurt. Tea and small milkyway

4pm small box of raisins or fruit

Dinner - time depends on whether I go to gym straight from work - brown pasta with chicken breast or fresh fish and veg. Chicken stir fry with rice

Normally have cup of tea and biscuit in the evening.

Sometimes with dinner I will have some small baby potatoes.

Trying to drink as much water as I can.

    Where am I going wrong?

    Thanks

Your diet is like 90% carbs you would want to be pretty active to see any results

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭dulchie75

    Hi Davei141

I go to figure 8 3 times a week,3 circuits, on top of that I do a 45 min spinning class, a 1hr cardio blast class and a yoga class. Try to walk at the weekends as well.

What should I be eating for dinners and lunch, was in weight watchers years ago but can't find the books they gave us.

I hate to say it but you are eating too much. It's not about carbs or protein. Calories are calories whether we get them from carbs, fat or protein. The only way you lose weight is calories in versus calories out.

The circuits at figure 8 don't really burn that many calories but it's still something and the yoga and spinning should definitely help.

I counted up your weight watchers points and depending on your portion sizes and whether you put milk in your tea and use butter on your scone or cracker you are using a minimum of 27points and up to 40 points if your portion sizes are big. That is an awful lot. At your height and weight you should really be only having 20 points a day.

A scone on its own has 6 POINTS!! that is without butter...

If you want anymore advise just ask, i'll even write out a few recipes and a diet plan for you that will cut your points in take in half. Hope this helps

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭dulchie75

My god I'm shocked at the amount of points, I have my ww point counter somewhere better look for it.

Any ideas you have for lunch and dinner would be great what to use instead of potatoes and pasta.

Obviously all the working out in the world is not going to help if I'm eating all the wrong stuff..

Meant to say would appreciate help with a diet plan.

    Thanks

Sounds like to much CV to me.

It sounds like your goal is to change your body shape - not to increase your cardiovascular performance. So based on that I'd say decrease the CV and start lifting proper weights on a full body routine.

Ditch the WeightWatcher points, open an Excel spreadsheet and start counting calories.

    Good luck :)

If you are going to count calories, you may as well count points. Its the same thing, just a hell of a lot less counting!

    Breakfast

30g non sugary cereal eg. cornflakes, special K or rice Krispies. 1.5 points
(I know people will say these are high in sugar but they are fine for the tyoe of diet you need, just dont have coco pops or frosties!)

Small bit of skimmed/low fat milk 0.5 points
Slice Toast w tsp low low spread 1.5 points

    Mid morning snack

    1 apple

    Lunch

Bowl of veg soup, home made with NO CREAM OR MILK!! 0 points
    Just veg and stock!!
    Small bread roll 2 points
Fruit with natural low fat yogurt 3.5 points

    Afternoon snack

Special K bar or Alpen Low bar 1.5 points

    Dinner

    Prawn stir fry 7 points

    Ingredients
60g rice or 1 portion amoy straight to wok noodles
1 red chilli, de-seeded and finely chopped
    1 tsp sesame oil
thumb-size piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
    1 large garlic clove, chopped
1 red pepper, de-seeded and thinly sliced
2 spring onions, thinly sliced on an angle
200g tiger prawns cooked or raw
    1 onion chopped roughly
    1 carrot finely sliced
    1 lime, juice only
    1 tbsp soy sauce
    1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
    50 ml Chinese rice wine

Fry chilli, onion, carrot in sesame oil for a few mins. Then throw in all other ingredients. Let cook for a 20 mins. have rice on boil. Serve when ready.

    Evening snack

Tea and 2 low fat biscuits 2.5 points
This is just one example... Obviously you need more variety but I will post some more when i'm finished typing them out. I'm new to this whole boards thing, so give me time!

One piece of advice, don't let peple talk you out of counting points. You don't have to join WW, i know its a rip off! But if you havr the books, it really does work! I lost 2 stone , I left ages ago and all the good habits have stayed with me.

Sorry forgot to say what fruit i meant with the low ft yogurt

Low fat natural yogurt is 1.5 points for the carton. i find the glenisk one is delicious, really creamy!

So you can have 2 points worth of fruit

    apple 0.5 points
    pear 1 point
    banana 1.5 points
    Strawberries 200g 1 point
    Kiwi 0.5 points
    plum (3) 0.5 points

You can use tinned if you like but not nearly as nice! But in its own juice not syrup!!

Nobody eats 30 grams of breakfast cereal.
    Lunch

Bowl of veg soup, home made with NO CREAM OR MILK!! 0 points
    Just veg and stock!!
    Small bread roll 2 points
Fruit with natural low fat yogurt 3.5 points

Stock has no points but a serious amount of salt, you might be under the impression you can eat loads of this but try it and see how bad you feel.
    Afternoon snack

Special K bar or Alpen Low bar

    These are junk
    Dinner

    Prawn stir fry

The first bit of decent protein of the day. Prawns have barely any calories so 7 points for that sounds like madness.

    Evening snack

Tea and 2 low fat biscuits 2.5 points

Why are all snacks junk? low fat biscuits?

Cant read too many good habits above apart from snacking on junk constantly because its "low cal" or "low fat".

Spend a bit of time OP looking around and knowing what you eat. Counting points doesn't tell people what would keep you fuller for longer, what sorts of food gets used by the body best. Take a bit of time and get the knowledge youll be thankful for it down the line. Read the stickies

i looked at what OP was eating before. She obviously enjoys a biscuit or 2 a day. If someone is going to change they need to take small steps. I think the food I recommended is good for a start. You're very good at tearing apart everything \i say but didn't give any advice on what OP should eat instead.

The stir fry includes OTHER ingredients than just prawns, when you add these together you get 7 points, DUH!

I said ONE bowl of soup. Not a tank load. I KNOW for a fact one bowl of soup a day is not going to do you any harm.

"NOBODY EATS 30g OF CEREAL" - I DID! when i was on a diet. One of those small variety packs is 30g

"WHY ARE ALL SNACKS JUNK?" - A cereal bar and 2 biscuits a day is not going to do any harm Especially when one is eating as much fruit as I have recommended.

If you have a better plan, post it! If not - stop ripping mine apart. It worked for me, I had a sweet tooth and it helped me to have a biscuit or 2 a day. It stopped me feeling as though I was depriving myself.

Complete abstinence works better, doesn't mean everyone should stop eating food for a few weeks at a time.

I wouldn't call your suggestion the healthy option, it's just eating the bare minimum with some sweet on top to keep people ticking over.

The bare minimum??? This is 1200 - 1500 cals a day. It is the recommended amount for a diet sorry i meant to write this, got mixed up!

I'm still waiting on your recommendations? ? Or are you just here to pass comment without actually giving any real advice?

If she wants to have a biscuit or 2 a day then she can, but your whole diet is based around the same junk thats in a biscuit.
The stir fry includes OTHER ingredients than just prawns, when you add these together you get 7 points, DUH!

Prawn and vegetables, how many points can vegetables have? More Veg should be encouraged.
I said ONE bowl of soup. Not a tank load. I KNOW for a fact one bowl of soup a day is not going to do you any harm.

Its not going to do you anything, thats the point. 5 minutes after that bowl of salt you will be hungry again. No doubt leading to snacking on the special K bar.
"NOBODY EATS 30g OF CEREAL" - I DID! when i was on a diet. One of those small variety packs is 30g

Thats the reason your diet is littered with little useless snacks, because the breakfast was what? 150 calories?
"WHY ARE ALL SNACKS JUNK?" - A cereal bar and 2 biscuits a day is not going to do any harm Especially when one is eating as much fruit as I have recommended.

Cereal bar - sugar. Biscuits - sugar. Fruit - Sugar. Sugar doesnt keep you full.

There is plenty of good advice on this forum that is 1 or 2 clicks away. I could write up a diet plan but the OP wont learn too much from it, also others on this forum are better at explaining it than i am.

You could lie in bed all day and your body would still burn close to 1000 calories, so if you only eat 1000-1200 then that is of course the VERY bare minimum! Unless you're 3 years old, are you?

My suggestion? I'm by no means an expert but....

    Breakfast

Porridge with an assortment of nuts + mushed up banana or
Wholemeal toast & (2) scrambled eggs with mushrooms & tomato

    Mid-morning snack

    Fruit and assortment of nuts

    Lunch

2 chicken breasts with some veg

    Mid-afternoon snack

Some form of salad with a range of vegetables

    Dinner

    Lean meat with more vegetables

    Evening Snack

Some whole wheat crackers with cottage cheese / peanut butter

Drink plenty of water throughout the day and allow yourself a cheat meal once a week with maybe the odd biscuit, NOT 2 biscuits a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 628 ✭✭✭hcass

It's recommended that evryone eats AT LEAST 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

There is rice in the stir fry.... and the sesame oil too. they all contain points.

There is 5 portions of vegetable in the dinner ALONE!

A bowl of veg soup will also have at least 2 portions of veg. I also said have fruit with yogurt and a bread roll, which will fill you up.

The breakfast was NOT 150 cals. Clearly you have a problem with basic maths.

YEsy you COULD write up a plan or you could just do what you've just done and try to make it look like you know everything about a subject you clearly have no clue about. OP is a WOMAN and I know for a fact his plan would suit her. ALso, this is just 1 F&%$ing day of the plan. They are not all the same.

    Hi hcass,

    Welcome :)

There is no need to get so thick because people disagree with you.
When you make statements like all calories are the same and put things like biscuits in diets you are bound to get some stick.
You're trying to help the OP so fair play but easy on the caps ;)

Women generally have a sweeter tooth than men and they have to eat less than a man would to lose weight as our bodies work differently. MEN have aa much higher muscle density than woman and burn calories faster.

Thank you ofr being polite but i HAVE to disagre with you about calories - they are all the same! If i eat 2000 cals a day but only burn 1500 i will gain weight. If I burn 2500 \i will lose it. It doesn't matter where those cals come from, be it a donut or a salad.

With a point so blindingly poor. You've undermined the entire argument you've made up until now IMO.

For someone so anti Tony Quinn, your allegience to the weight watcher's system is also quite comical.

Going to keep a food diary for a while and just see exactly what I'm eating and when I feel hungry. Got some almonds today for snacking on, lets hope I don't go overboard:D
