Can anyone recommend a type of van similar to a Ford Transit? Has to be a crew cab?

    VW Transporter,
    Renault Traffic,
    Nissan Primastar,
    Opel Vivaro,
    MB Sprinter,
    Toyota Hiace.

Transit is the best of the bunch though.

What size are you looking for? To avoid VRT most are 3.5T LWB vans which might not suit - there are very few smaller ones available.

Transits are overrated but still an ok van.

Consider a Iveco Daily unijet. An underrated van, terrific engine, well priced parts and well enogh made. They do suffer from dodgy sliding door mechanisms but are terrific vale for moeny secondhand. Thats what i'd go for.

Nah the gearbox issue is old news. All sorted since 2005. What about the timing chain issue on the transits that makes them impossible to start or the dodgy fuel pumps. They all have their problems...

    Exactly...
All new vans have each of their own problems, best just to pick the one that suits what you need it for best and get a good one.
