Is it possible to feed 2 sky boxes from one cable from the dish?

Have a Sky sub in one room and want to use a FTA box in another room.

Both Tvs wont be used at the same time so Im thinking of feeding both boxes using a splitter from the one cable.I do have another free spot on the Lnb but it would mean a fair bit of drilling.

Another question is what would happen if both boxes were used at the same time by mistake?

Hope this doesnt sound like a stupid question.

    Thanks

    Richie.

No you can not split satellite cable. It will not work.
What you can do is feed cable to one of your sat boxes then out of that one use RF out and connect it the other TV. No need for second sky box for this

Since you have 2 sky boxes ideally you should connect one cable from the dish to each box. This way you would be able to watch different channels at the same time.

Thanks for that.Just spotted that my existing box has 2 rf outputs on it.Its an older panasonic so i might just use that.

Or else Ill just get the drill out and use the other box with the Uk card.

I thought you can get satellite splitters? I thought they work on the basis of only having power pass on one of the split connections - so that you effectively nominate 1 receiver to power the LNB. And the 2nd receiver is just getting a copy of the signal - meaning the main receiver must be on for the 2nd receiver to get a signal? From reading a bit more though - it seems as though the LNB polarity is also set by the master receiver - meaning the 2nd receiver may only be able to see a subset of all available channels - and that subset may change if the master receiver changes channel. So not a complete solution...

There is one by Philex here:-

    This is an old chesnut.

Satellite splitters are for VERY specialist use.

The LNB is either on high band or low band or Vertical polarised or Horisontally polarised. So at any time only about 1/4 of channels are available.

That is why there are QUAD LNBs with four outputs.

Don't use a Satellite Splitter. It will only work some of the time.

Those splitters SHOULD NOT EVER be sold retail. They are only good for specialist applications, e.g:
    • Split signal on a VSAT ODU to allow TV reception as well as two way internet, but only on about 1/4 of channels.
    • Split signal on a satellite where all the channels of interest are on same band and polarisation (There are some but doesn't apply to Sky/FTA/Freesat of UK channels).

You could also use a Smart Priority Switch. The master receiver always gets priority when powered on. When the master receiver is powered off, the cable and control of the LNBF is switched over to the slave receiver.

Yeah, that'd be the best approach IMO.
