Hey, I'm thinking about getting a 5.1 for my ps3. I need one that has an optical in, right? Does anyone have any recommendations. I'm trying to keep it around or under the €100 mark. Cheers.

If you can stretch your budget a bit look at this
    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/542071/art/yamaha/av-3101-home-cinema-syste.html

It's streets ahead of the logitech and fully upgradable, has 2 x Optical. You won't regret it!!!!

Ah nuts. I really wasn't hoping to spend anywhere in the region of €270 on this. :( I've seen 5.1 systems for under a €100 (some are meant to be quite good) but none of them had an optical input.

    just get the logitech z-5500

I use one of these with my ps3. It really is an excellent piece of kit. It has an optical in slot, obviously. The sound of it while gaming is incredible, especially with FPS games. It even comes with a calibration mic that helps you get the best sound dependent on where you're sitting!

Its great for normal tv too. I have it connected to the sky box, simply by scart, and its class. Makes the tv's speakers sound sh*t. I totally recommend it. Its a nice bit cheaper than the logitech system too. It should be around 200e in the shops as well. No need to get it off pixmania.

Actually, just looked it up and its 200e in power city. See here

Is that the one that came with the 32" sony deal in currys for €549? It looks like it, one of my friends was gonna buy one of those but didn't need the surround sound. I was gonna give him €50 for it but he didn't get one in time. :(

Any ways that one looks like it'll do. I might be building a new pc soon as well (big fúck you to the recession :D). If the pc has optical out connection I assume it'll work with this as well.

Yeah, its the same one as the currys deal. Yep, it'll work with anything with an optical out function but be aware that theres only one "optical in" port on the sony so you might want to get as splitter.

Bought myself a logitech x540 recently and they're perfect. Have them connected to TV so all sound comes through them. They simulate 5.1 from a 2 channel input (2 phono red/white cable) and I'm delighted with them. http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/417821/art/logitech/x-540-5-1-loudspeaker-sys.html
I was on a budget of €100 too and went with these. Simple set of speakers, rather than an amp set up. The only thing I will say against them is that the remote is wired. Not a problem for me as its on a table beside where I sit, but if you're going to put them somewhere further away, bear this in mind.

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/6753083/Trail/searchtext%3ESPEAKERS.htm
problem is that they were 100 euro ! compared to 75 delivered from pixmania... ill have to keep that in mind alright.

I got to spoil myself with an old sony hifi with 5.1 surround sound, think they cost like 800 in their day ! never use them though :)
    (for the PC(and PS2) rather than PS3)

Op this is one of my pet hates, why buy a cheap TVs when a expensive one is 20times better. So why buy a chaep sound system when the slightly expensive one is 20times better!! The logitech speakers are not bad, but if you get a system like suggested (the yamaha) you've gotten something you can upgrade easily. Get new better speakers.

The system in a box is good i think sony's are the best. as the setup is good on them and easy.

If it was my money, id save a little extra and get a dedicated system in the form of a proper amp, and speakers.
I think its a false economy gettting the cheap systems, all IMO.

I have being bitten twice once with a cheap surround sound for the ps2 and 2nd with an all in one system.

Go with the sony if its closer to your price target.

    +1. Fantastic Sound

You clearly have not heard fantastic sound, because the z5500 does not produce it. The bass is absolutely horrendous and ranges from booming to non existent. Also, OP, look up known issues about the z5500's, because there are many.

Don't cheap out on the audio. Save up and get something you will keep for years.

First off, optical audio on the PS3 is not true 5.1. To get true 5.1 you will need to use the audio from the HDMI connection.

    This is my audio setup:

AV receiver: Onkyo TXSR606, look up reviews about this, for the price you really can't do better
Speakers and Sub: Mordaunt Short Avant Premiere, great speakers and a pretty decent Sub for the price.

For the wiring I used the 76 strand stuff from maplins.

What do you mean? The quality isn't that good? Optical does support 5.1, doesn't it?

I'm also looking for 5.1 speakers for my PS3, for movies and games.
I have a Samsung HD TV with HDMI in and Optical out. What would be the best set up here? I don't want to buy a home cinema system with a dvd player because I already have it in my PS3.
Should I buy speakers with an amplifier then? Would I be able to hook them up to both my TV and PS3? e.g. something like this:
    HDMI out (PS3) -> HDMI in (TV) -> HDMI/Optical out (TV) -> amplifier/speakers

    I'd say it would be better if it was;

Ps3 -> Amp, Via HDMI, and then Amp -> Tv, via hdmi. The Amp will extract the 5.1 surround and then send on the viseo signal to the hdtv

I know that cheaping out on stuff isn't a good idea (well in most cases). A friend of mine got a set of 5.1 speakers for €20, he asked me did I want one and I told him I'd rather wipe my arse with the money instead. What I'm looking for is good bang for your buck. I thought I'd be able to get a decent one for around €100 as I had seen 5.1 speakers without optical for around that price that were meant to be pretty good.

I didn't know that. Why is that and how is it not true 5.1? Also nice setup there. What's your address and when are you going on holidays? :D

z5500 is decent, but not fantastic. ..... Mind you some people say Onkyo products don't live up to the hype either. :)

Sorry Almightycushion didn't mean to offend! For 100 though i don't think you'll get alot IMO.
Im telling you its the mistake ive made once so don't go the cheap route.
Those logitech speakers seem to have a problem with fuses.
    Go to the richersounds website.
At the moment i have the TV plugged into a stereo for that extra little bang its good in a little apartment but i had an all in one system that the DVD kept breaking on me, so it was pointless.

So what im getting at is the yamaha in my eyes is the best option you can go for its decent quality for little money.
The likes of those logitech speakers are really only PC speakers not a home cinema quality IMO.

The Onkyos need a lot of tuning out of the box to configure them for your setup and room size, but once done they are excellent value for money. They also get pretty hot so I have left mine with a lot of headroom. Compared to the audio I used to have from my z5500 it is in another league all together.

Yeah the Yamahas are also amazing. If you can get one with HDMI out and a decent upscaler then go for it. Keep an eye on adverts.ie as there might be some good receivers on sale there.
I didn't know that. Why is that and how is it not true 5.1?

HDMI allows for lossless audio, Optical is lossy. If you are going for a low end setup then stick with optical. Only go for HDMI if you are going to be getting speakers and a receiver that can produce it (i.e. If you are plugging the HDMI directly into the TV then stick with optical)

Sorry for going off topic but what cables are you using for connecting up all your equipment. The setup looks quality!!! How much headroom are you giving tho Onkyo? Thanks

I'm using the Maplin 76 strand stuff to hook up the speakers to the receiver. From there I just use bog standard HDMI, optical and phono cables to connect to my peripherals. Don't bother with those fancy "oxygen free" cables.

Or you can choose not to use the optical port....

    Pixmania Cheap Option

I only have a 20'' LCD in my room and so the sound is crap. Do these speakers we are talking about work for my DVD player or even normal tv

Is an amp a neccessity? Can't you just have speakers? or is it that you can't control the sound on speakers without an amp?

Sorry, Im a complete audiohphobe. I have seen cheap logitech systems for the ps3 for around 50e. I liked the look of them tbh!

you need a decoder to translate the 1's and 0's from either the optical (up to DTS/DD 5.1) or HDMI (up to DTSMA/DolbyTrueHD 7.1) into PCM (vaguely analogue).

Then you need an amplifier to amplify the nominal voltages of the PCM "analogue" signal into voltages big enough to drive the speakers that you have.

Sometimes these all come in the one package, or you can get distinct pieces of equipment for each task.

The features that you get in the equipment differ too but you get the idea.
